new_me_2008 1 Posted October 21, 2007 Hi, I tried this program in the past (pre-band) and really liked it but was uncomfortable due to my size. Now that the weight is starting to come off, I would like to try this program again. My question: When I am released for strenuous exercise (I think it is 4 weeks after surgery - so two weeks from now) do you think it is OK to begin week one of the couch to 5K or should I wait more? I am already walking 30 minutes a day at 3.5 MPH and doing some pretty strenouous hills - and actually enjoying it! I have the nike+ program and an ipod nano, so I am set to go. KarenG. 0 Posted October 21, 2007 I started last week and I was fine. I am only about 2 1/2 months out. Maybe check in with your doctor - I was given specific instructions when I asked about when I could lift weights, etc.
jmarruda 22 Posted October 22, 2007 Hey Tina, I'd show the doc the actual program, let him take a look at it, and tell you whether you will be able to do it.
JulieNYC 4 Posted October 22, 2007 I tripled it when I did it and that really helped (meaning, I did each "day" three times before moving to the next step). It made me feel like I was doing something but I was losing enough weight so that I didn't hurt myself by the time I was actually running the longer segments. Get released to exercise, then go at your own pace. Never run 2 days in a row and don't run through pain. Cardio stress is fine, some discomfort WHILE running can be expected at first, but if you have pain after running, back it off until your body can handle it. The goal is to be able to run for years and years to help combat this weight we all struggle with. Running is a MAJOR tool, if you can make use of it! (I'm running the NYC marathon on November 4th -- one week and six days from now. I started with the couch to 5K plan in January of this year, so it really, really can work!) KarenG. 0 Posted October 22, 2007 I can't believe that you just started running in January! So amazing - I will look for you when I go to cheer my friend at the finish line in the park on Sunday. Hoping to do a 5K myself this spring.
new_me_2008 1 Posted October 25, 2007 Julie and All - Thanks for the posts. Julie - I too am amazed that you started in January. Were you active before then but just took up the running program in Jan? I will be thinking about you as you complete the marathon - that is a truly amazing accomplishment. The advice on doubling up the program is a great one - I will try that. Tina
