Metal detectors

Recommended Posts

I know that they orientation staff told me that the band will not set off an airport metal detector but will it set of something more sensitve, such as when you have to enter a federal building? I know it sounds stupid, just wondering.

I travel for a living and I've been banded 18 months. I have not one time set off an alarm. I have, however, heard others say they did. There is only a miniscule amount of titanium in the port of the band. It should not set off alarms. Let us know what your experience is.

I not only have the band, but I have a sort of pacemaker with a metal wire in it. Yes, I am the bionic woman! And I still have never set off an alarm.

I've heard that only the most sensitive equipment is set off by the small amount of metal. It's very rare. I keep my Inamed card handy just in case. :)

The heavy metal wire that laces my husband's ribcage back together after open-heart surgery never sets off any sensors. However the 1" metal hinge on my Estee Lauder metal compact was picked up. On a return trip, a metal pick w/7 7" metal prongs was not picked up (that I forgot to check into baggage first.) So go figure!

My dh works at the worlds 3rd largest airport and goes through security everyday. He has gotten to know some of the TSA people and they have told him that sometimes the equipment seems to tweak itself up in sensitivity and they have noticed that it usually happens when the barometric pressure is up. I don't know if that is true or not, but that is their story and they're sticking to it, LOL! If it is true, you may be able to pass through one day and get snagged the next. Go figure!!!!

I have flown several times and haven't had a problem.

I was at my friend's house the other day and he had a super strong magnet on his fridge that you can hardly pull off. I asked him if I could have it, and darn it if it didn't pull on my little port when I put it on my tummy! It didn't stick, but it sure felt cool and was a great party trick.

Interesting question considering my husband is spending his day at the park with his metal detector. Tonight I'll lay on the lawn and see if he can pick up my band. Yes, I am a dork.

Never had a problem with my band or port, my knee replacement sets off the machines every time. My family doesn't even want to go through security with me. I have the card from my MD about my joint replacement, but the TSA isn't interested in looking at it. Oh well..........

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
