Eating rice - why is this difficult?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I was banded on 10/10/07 and although I have not yet tried rice I understand that it is classed as a difficult food for bandsters. Can anyone explain this to me because I would have thought that even without chewing, grains of rice are small enough to go through the stoma?

I was banded on 10/11 and also haven't tried rice. I hadn't heard it was difficult. Maybe because it's kind of sticky and like fresh bread balls up in there.

From my experience, it really depends on what kind of rice you eat. The white rice they serve with Chinese food is impossible for me to eat, even if I have sauce. WHole grain and wild rice? Totally fine.

I don't know for certain, but I think it just has to do with the way it is cooked. I think steamed or microwave rice might be more difficult that baked or slow-cooked rice...the method of cooking I think changes the consistency of the grain, making it more difficult for us with bands.

I don't know if it's true or not (I'm only 3 weeks out from being banded) but have heard people say basmati rice goes down easier than other types. I hope this is true because I love curry and eat basmati with mine. But if it's not then I guess I'll learn to live without it.

Rice tends to expand in your tummy. you eat 2 tablespoons and are satisfied, it expands and you are miserable.

i was ok with rice until my last fill. dont want to go through that again. miserable!

I've not had a problem with rice. I eat it frequently as it's one of the foods I don't have a problem with.

Now Pasta...that's another story. I even broke the spaghettie noodles down to tiny sticks, really tiny...still came back up. But there are many who don't have this problem w/pasta.

I am not a rice eater, but at my nutritionist visit, I was told only long grain rice is allowed. I thought that was very strange...

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
