Psych Eval question

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I'll be having my psych eval on 8/26. I was wondering what to expect. All I know about it is that it will take 2 hours (that's what the psychologist told me when I made the appointment)....I think I'm psychologically stable (I have my up's and down's like everyone else). I've only ever been for counseling once (when my brother committed suicide, 10 years ago). Any input would be appreciated!

Marsha

I know all psychologists are different, but mine pretty much just asked me LOTS of questions pertaining to the band. She went over the benefits, as well as the risks and just wanted to make sure that I understood what I was getting into. She did ask some questions about my past (have I had any kind of family trauma, have I ever been treated for any mental illnesses or depression) things like that, but mostly asked how I am going to change my lifestyle after having the surgery and made sure that I fully understood the changes that would have to be made in my life. I guess some people go into a depression when they're deprived of food. Most obese people are food addicts and it's a big shock to not be able to eat like you're used to. But I would just be completely honest with him/her and let them know that you are fully aware of the lifestyle changes that you will have to make and let them know that you're ready to make those changes. Hope I've helped a little. Good luck!

Hi Marsha,

I think Brandi's right, and if you don't already know about a given problem you might have that makes you an unfit candidate for the band, I don't think it's likely a psych evaluation will uncover one.

I'd never had counseling at all before my psych eval (that I can remember), and it was a 90-minute chat about my life. We talked about my weight and I was just completely honest. I'd definitely advise to not lie or keep any information back--that may be exactly what they're looking for.

But if you have explored the banding experience and thought about how you'll live with it (which you obviously are in the process of doing, right now) just share that knowledge with the psychologist. You'll do fine!!

My psych eval was less than an hour. These doctors are trained to probe for hidden problems, and want to make sure you are a good candidate for this type of procedure, and doing it for the right reasons. All of us have issues regarding food or we wouldn't be on this board. But it seemed that my doc was looking to see if I could make rational decisions, had balance in my life, wasn't just looking for a "quick fix" or an easy way out, that I had a good support system, etc. I didn't feel like he was out to trap me, or make me reveal something hidden in my psyche. Actually, it was kinda fun! Just be totally honest and you have nothing to fear.

:D :D :D

Thanks to all of you for your replys. You've made me feel more comfortable about the whole thing. I will just be honest and open. I think I'm pretty level headed and know that the band is a tool and I will have to do my part. I'm an emotional eater sometimes (as I think many of us are) :D but I'm willing to get help if I need it after I get the band. Well, thanks again for all your input! I'll let you know how it goes!

:D

My psych pretty much told me why they have us do that evaluation. He said insurance companies want to make sure we are making a level-headed decision and that we are aware of the risks and positives involved. Also, make sure you do lots of research regarding the band, and also RNY. They like to see that you have researched all options. You may also mention the fact that you have met many other people who are banded via this and other message boards and support groups. Don't have unrealistic expectations from the procedure, and the evaluation will go without a hitch.

Good luck

JC

THanks to everyone! I don't know why that psych eval made me so nervous. It turned out to be a piece of cake. She just asked about my life and weight history. SHe made sure I understood that the band isn't a cure but a tool to loose weight, etc. She said she'll send a clean report to my doctor!! YEAH, it's over and done with!

:D One step closer to my band,

Marsha

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
