I have been seeing on here where many people go weeks with liquids before. My dr has not mentioned this at all to me and my date is set for the 8th of December. I'm so excited to get this done but feel like I need to be on liquids. Has anyone else not required to be on liquids until immediately before surgery. Thanks

I was required to be on the full liquid diet for 1 week before surgery, and only Clear Liquids the day before surgery. I did 2 weeks instead of 1 anyway. if you feel that you should be doing a liquid diet, discuss it with your team. It certainly couldn't hurt as it would shrink your liver and help you to drop more weight than you would be able to achieve by eating food the week before surgery.

Good luck!

Congrats on your December 8th sugery date.

Good advice from @DropWt4Life I did not have a pre op liquid diet. My Dr said my liver looked fine. Each of us seem to have different instructions. Check with your surgeons office.

Thanks for the info. He just said high Protein diet and little to no carbs. I think I will try the doing liquids for a week. Going to ask my team but I could use the practice and make the transition easier post surgery.

I wouldn't wish my two week liquid diet on my worst enemy. It's rough. I'm incredibly hungry, and grouchy. LOL.

Each surgeon has a different theory and comfort level about liquid diet before surgery. And some have different rules for different patients based on your body type.

My surgeon is one of the stricter ones.

One thing the liquid diet does that we don't talk about.......is to cause the people who might bail out at the last minute to bail out sooner...thus leaving time to put someone else in that surgery slot.

But it's also really good practice for after surgery. You'll be used to the restrictions and suffer fewer of the psychological crazies on top of the pain. For me, the psychological crazies have been pretty intense. Not eating anything solid for a week has been a serious adjustment.

I think that's why as much as I don't I want to just get use to what life is going to be like. Been in the program since April so it's crazy it's less than two weeks away [emoji15]

My regular, wonderful low fat low carb limited calorie diet.....seems decadent and indulgent...compared to the hell of the shakes. I miss my diet food.

I had no pre-op diet, my surgeon only asks folks who are 300+ to do a pre-op diet. I was skeptical too bc it seemed like everyone else was doing a pre-op diet but me. My surgery was without complication and i've had zero issues post op...

Mine was just three days of clear liquid beforehand to clear out the pipes. It really depends on your surgeon!

Honestly, I'd prefer liquids for two weeks before. I personally hate eating, it's so damn stressful to make the right choices and I usually end up sick to my stomach. I have a long history of fasting, so I actually really enjoyed that time.

If you do decide to fast, make sure to let your surgeon's office know as it might effect your numbers on surgery day and they should be aware of that.

I'm on 3 shakes and 1 small high Protein, LOW carb meal daily.... It started today (10 days pre op)...(some in my patient group are on 5 shakes and no small meal. Dr. said its to help shrink liver and all depends on ones BMI.).... I'm not sure I can drink 3 shakes a day, and a meal.... Way too much for me.... But I'm going to try, plus take my Vitamins and calcium chews etc....

Im determined to win my weight loss journey....

Although the 30 mins im doing on the elliptical is brutal....😀😀

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
