Biking after surgery/general exercise questions

Recommended Posts

Just had surgery 11/13, I have consistently been doing my "30 minutes a day" since Wednesday the 22nd. Before that it was some days, or not the full 30, etc (husband shared his cold with me 2 days after coming home from the hospital, sneezing + surgery= swell).

I love biking, and my surgeon said I can bike as soon as I'm up to it. Yesterday, 11/25, we went biking in a paved, flat trail. I made it 32 minutes and was so weak by the time we finished I almost couldn't get off the bike. This is a trail I did pre-op as an easy, mid week after work route.

Today even my 40 minute walk was draining. Is this normal? And how long is this fatigue going to last?

Yeah it's a bit soon after surgery to be biking!! Start with walking. You just had major surgery 12 weeks before exercise other then walking....start slowly. It took me about 8 weeks to get up to an hour walk. A walk to that I did easily pre-surgery. But your body is healing and you're still have affects of the anesthesia.

Yes, it’s normal. Your body is healing from the surgery & you’re taking in so much less calories than before.

It took me 2 months for my body to adjust to less calories.

Height: 5'0"
Weight for WLS consultation: 216 lbs.
Surgery date: 2/13/17
Goal: -71 lbs for healthy BMI (about 145 lbs).

Omg that’s too much too soon!! Ur body inside is still healing,, I wouldnt risk damaging all that work for a bike ride,, I know you’re prob anxious to start losing but you have to give ur body at least 5 weeks to heal,,, just go for walks!!!

I'm 7 weeks post op and just got back in the gym. It's hard, very hard. I last 30 min and I'm drained after that. If I push myself to do 45 min I'll end up in bed. Before surgery I could workout and feel fine but now no way. Baby steps I guess. Just take it easy don't overdue it.

Thank y'all for the responses, you're totally right it was just too early. I'm kicking ass now walking every day, and looking forward to biking and lifting again- at the appropriate time. [emoji28]

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
