Any advice please

Recommended Posts

So my surgery is Tuesday 11/28 I woke up sick yesterday....of course. No fever just horribly runny nose and sore throat. I'm taking Vitamin C and drinking tons of Fluid any other advice? I'll rest as much as possible but I work 12 hour night shifts right up to the morning of surgery. Any help appreciated.

Also (this may be tmi for some) I'm chronically anemic and was supposed to start my period the 30th and I guess because it's my lucky day I started early, this morning. Anyone else have issues with this right before surgery and should I be concerned that my hemoglobin will be too low for surgery?

It depends when your blood work was/is and how strong the numbers were. The further out/weaker your numbers were the more likely they would be to want to redraw labs on the day of surgery.

If it's a legitimate concern it's worth a call to the office, so they could plan accordingly

The runny nose/throat thing is a judgement call. But maybe calling in sick the day before wouldn't be the worst idea

This is why they say "Call the office with questions or concerns"

I absolutely understand being hesitant to do this and risk having your surgery delayed...but you have to put your safety first. You want the best outcome possible....so you need to come clean with your team. Give them a call first thing Monday morning.

What you're describing might not be a problem. A cold without a fever usually won't disqualify you from surgery, and getting your period typically won't, either. BUT! Your team needs to weigh in on these things, and they might want to run a little last minute complete blood count to make sure your cold isn't something more serious, and gauge the severity of your anemia.

They cannot do their job properly without complete information. Please call them. And good luck with your surgery...so sorry you've got these complications. Bad luck! Wishing you the best.

I agree. Definitely call the doctor with questions about cold symptoms. I also got an early period the morning of my surgery. It's probably due to stress. Try to relax and don't worry too much. Best wishes!

Start taking zicam swabs asap! They will help shorten the sickness. Sometimes to just a few days.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
