How much did you lose BEFORE the liquid diet?

Recommended Posts

My surgery is on December 28. Since I first met with my surgeon on 9/22, I was supposed to lose 1-2 lbs a week and I haven't quite been able to do it. I'm down about 7 lbs total (in those 9 weeks) and hoping to lose another 3 before my pre-op appointment one week from today, but I'm hungry all the damn time, struggling to lose, and nervous my surgeon is going to think I haven't lost enough weight to keep my 12/28 surgery date. Even though I'm completely dreading the liquid diet, I'm toying with the idea of doing it this week, just to give me a boost. I'm curious how much weight people lost BEFORE going on their liquid diet. If you didn't lose much, how did your surgeon react?

My insurance required 6 months of medically supervised weight loss. I've been dieting since June. Lost 33 pounds following a diet high in Protein and non-starchy veggies, with just a few low glycemic index carbs.

My surgical group requires you to lose 10% of your body weight to be eligible for surgery.

My surgery is December 5th...so I started my liquid diet 4 days ago.

The liquid diet is hell. (to me, anyway) I would a LOT rather eat a very low calorie diet of real food. (again, that might just be me)

My liquid diet is 5 shakes a day, plus one serving of cream of wheat or yogurt per day (about 100 calories worth)....plus sugar free Jello and sugar free drinks. It's not pleasant...but you do lose weight rapidly. In 4 days of being on it, I've lost 3 pounds.

If you think you're hungry now....just wait till you try liquid. Ugh.

I was a 41 BMI when I started on my 3 month diet, I needed to stay above a 40 for my insurance to allow it so I ended up losing 13 lbs very quickly then had to maintain that weight within 1.5 lbs either direction (or my surgery would’ve been denied) for 2 months plus 5 weeks waiting for my preop diet to start. I lost 13 lbs preop, 11 lbs during the liquid diet, (gained 8 lbs with surgery) and lost that and a few of its buddies as of today.

I enjoyed my liquid diet, I loved the bone broths and can’t wait for my new stomach to let me have them again. Since surgery my diet has been Water for the first 4 days and today I can tolerate some of my Protein Shake and hoping to give Bone Broth a try.

Have a great day!

Goal weight 150’ish 🤞🏼

I never had to do liquid,my bmi was really high so I have been on a strict diet since April and I do 2 protien shakes and keep everything else low carb low sugar low cal. I lost 90 on my own and now that my surgery is Thursday I am still just cutting back and exercising every day twice a day because I want to be down more come time. Try exercising if you are not doing so it will make a big difference.

Wow, no diet at all? Why do you think that was?

My pre-op appointment is this Friday and I'm basically putting myself on a modified version of the liquid diet for the next 4 days, in the hopes of being 10 lbs down (since my initial consultation with my surgeon). I'm nervous I'm going to get my knuckles wrapped for not losing enough so far... :(

It seems a bit different what they do in Canada vs United States. For us, with the free health care the way can be VERY long. I waited two years after seeing my surgeon to have an actual date so I think they just don't want you to take more weight if you do a diet before hand and get heavier after.

If you are scared for the weight I would suggest to start a food journal, it might help you lose a bit more.

That makes sense (my mother lives in Eastern Canada and told me the wait there can be 4-5 years for surgery; she was AMAZED I met with my surgeon in September and had a December surgery date here in Massachusetts).

I keep track of my food in the Weight Watchers app. It's good for accountability but doesn't help me from feeling hungry all the time, though... :)

I've lost 75.4 since about mid June. I started at 406 (6'3" guy). My insurance required a six month physician supervised diet before approval. They did not give a weight loss mark you had to hit, but I set a personal goal to lose 50 lb by surgery date. I hit that at about the four-month mark, So I reset my goal to 75 lbs. I hit that on Thanksgiving morning, so now I'm trying to get to 80 lb by my December 11th surgery date. I start the liquid diet tomorrow, so thinking I should be able to shave off another 4.6 in the next 2 weeks. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
