When does food not need to be chewed to complete mush?

Recommended Posts

I know chewing your food to a complete puree is a key action post op with the sleeve. Does this get better with time (ie in 5 years will I need to chew every bite 20-30 times)

Taking your time I'm fine with, no liquids and that also is pretty easy to do. But worrying about food getting lodged or making me vomit for a long time is kind of a downer.

Just wondering how it looks down the road

I pretty much suck at this. I'm sure I never chewed 30 times. Two months out and I'm chewing less than 20 for sure. Is that good? Probably not. But I don't think anything is going to get lodged.

Well getting lodged isn't a huge concern, as I imagine that's statistically improbable. But nausea and vomiting could be extremely unpleasant

I've never actually vomited. I've spit up a couple of times from eating too fast, I think, or taking one bite too many. It's a learning process there. That's the sleeve though. Vomiting is probably a different issue for bypass.n

Chewing your food and slowing down when you eat will help you for long term success. It's a part of mindful eating. It will help you recognize when you feel full. If you are eating fast you might not recognise full until it's too late. Yes, you can vomit with the sleeve.

Normally as in how a normal person who never had a sleeve would chew? Because that's kinda neutral what I wanted to hear.

And how long on average does it take to have a meal

I would imagine in our altered physical state we need to help digestion because of the stomach that is left is missing some of the process. The nerves, muscles, and the entire process have been injured.

I don't chew things to a mush anymore. However, eating too quickly and not realizing how much you ate is a problem and can be helped by chewing everything a lot and slowly. I've made this mistake a couple times but I just take breaks between bites. I ate a little too much and it was painful ( I can only eat 2 oz at a time).

I can't understand what your saying in the second part about neutral being what you wanted to hear.

All I know is I chew normal I don't know about anything else. Neither do I sit timing my meal. I eat Finnish move on the next task so can't answer your question. I have two kids I don't sit seeing how long it takes I'm sat talking and eating etc.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
