Dumb question! Does our stomachs absorb our medicine or does it slide right through? It’s important I get my anxiety medicine Thanks!!

In general it's the intestines that do the absorbing both before and after surgery.

The difference is after surgery the stomach doesn't produce as much acid and digestive enzymes, and food and meds don't sit in it as long (in the churning, acidy soup).. so some meds don't break down as well in order to be absorbed (sometimes extended release pills have to be switched for short acting ones).

Discuss meds with your doctor and/or pharmacist.

I take an antidepressant and I haven't noticed any changes. At one point we increased it but just for a week or two. The other meds. Diabetes medication I had to stop the day before surgery and never went back on it. High blood pressure meds have been reduced twice due to weight-loss so they must have still been working. I take slow release pain meds and I'm not sure that they are doing the job so I'm going to look at that next time I see the Dr. I take all of mine with Water before I eat anything seems to work except when I had antibiotics they had to be with food.

so I was instructed by my surgeon I can still take my anxiety medication in the mornings as usual however I have to dissolve the tablet in Water and drink it in powder form with little bit a Water. I had my mini bypass on Thursday, dec 14,2017 and he pretty much said I couldn’t take my pill whole. Idk if that’s just his preference,so I would discuss it with your surgeon but I still take my lexapro 20mg for my anxiety and baby liquid medication when I get my tension headaches. I did have to stop taking my medication one day prior to my surgery.

I know I really didn’t answer your answer about the medication being absorb or if it’s slides through but hopefully my post is a little helpful and sorry for my bad grammar.

Talk to your doctor/surgeon and your psych (prescribing) doc and therapist. In my opinion, psych meds are maybe one of THE most important meds to have a post op plan for that accounts for your new anatomy and absorption issues. Any time release or enteric coated medicines need to be replaced with the 4-6 hour immediate release kind that can be crushed or split.
