Creekimp13 5,840 Posted November 21, 2017 They tell you to walk...to prevent blood clots, to increase circulation and aid in healing....everyone's always saying...walk. Keep walking. But here's my question, how much is too much walking? Like...from Day one of surgery......can anyone give an estimate of how many steps they're doing per day? I want to push myself to keep walking, but not insanely, you know?
TheNewMrsR 249 Posted November 21, 2017 I walked 2 miles in laps the day of surgery after I woke up. The next day I had to wait for hubby to pick me up and walked 4 miles in laps. Neither of those we're all at once. I found a route around the ward that was a 1/4 mile and every hour or so I'd walk the loop a couple times. The nurses were astonished and asked if I was practicing for a marathon? They said I deserved an award. Hahaha. However, once I got home and the pain meds wore off that they had been shooting into my IV, I slowed down to only a couple miles a day in 1/4 miles loops around my apartment building parking lot a few times a day. Berry78 4,261 Posted November 21, 2017 This is going to vary as much as the patients. You don't want to get too tired or sore, so do what you can, and if your body says stop, then listen. A quick walk down a hall and back is enough to get some blood moving. Frequency of movement is more important than distance. 1 Creekimp13 reacted to this
