How much walking is too much, post surgical?

Recommended Posts

They tell you to walk...to prevent blood clots, to increase circulation and aid in healing....everyone's always saying...walk. Keep walking.

But here's my question, how much is too much walking?

Like...from Day one of surgery......can anyone give an estimate of how many steps they're doing per day?

I want to push myself to keep walking, but not insanely, you know?

I walked 2 miles in laps the day of surgery after I woke up. The next day I had to wait for hubby to pick me up and walked 4 miles in laps. Neither of those we're all at once. I found a route around the ward that was a 1/4 mile and every hour or so I'd walk the loop a couple times. The nurses were astonished and asked if I was practicing for a marathon? They said I deserved an award. Hahaha. However, once I got home and the pain meds wore off that they had been shooting into my IV, I slowed down to only a couple miles a day in 1/4 miles loops around my apartment building parking lot a few times a day.

This is going to vary as much as the patients. You don't want to get too tired or sore, so do what you can, and if your body says stop, then listen. A quick walk down a hall and back is enough to get some blood moving. Frequency of movement is more important than distance.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
