Post-op Protein bars?

Recommended Posts

My NUT gave me some recipes to make homemade Protein Bars and I’m looking for some more recipes or store bought ones.

Any recommendations?

I used Quest Protein bars. These bars were good in that they had high protein, minimal sugar and also contained Fiber. One of the problems that can plague those that had weight loss surgery is Constipation. Fiber helps with that problem. These protein bars also came in a lot of different flavors.

When I compared this Protein Bar with my Protein Shake, it revealed the following: A Quest protein bar contains 220 calories and provides 21 grams of protein. A Muscle Milk Light protein [2 scoops of powder in a 16 ounce glass of water] contains 210 calories and provides 25 grams of protein. So they are comparable.

I don’t care for the taste of Quest bars at all and I’ve tried MANY flavors. Instead, I sometimes eat Atkins Protein bars. But a lot of compnies’ protein bars are full of fillers, artificial sweeteners, thickeners, palm oil, preservatives, etc. So my new favorite on-the-go bars are from the company, RXBAR. Their bars just contain egg whites, nuts, and dates.

The Quest bars aren't the best tasting in the world, but they're decent enough. I'll grab one from a gas station if we're on the go and need a decent Protein source. Problem is that they never leave me feeling really satisifed. They are also pricey but you can order them by the box online.

A hint for those who use the Quest bars: Put the bar in the microwave for 10-15 sec. It gets soft and tastes so much better! I take the chocolate chip cookie dough bar, cut it into pieces, microwave them, and it's like I'm eating chocolate chip cookies!

My nutritionist recommended Quest, the Oh Yeah brand which I haven't found in my area yet, and Power Crunch bars.

The Power Crunch bar in chocolate and mint chocolate are the best ever! They have wafers inside, so they are crunchy and the mint chocolate is reminiscent of the thin mint flavor. I keep mine in the refrigerator because the chocolate coating on the outside gets pretty melty if it doesn't start off chilled.

Another great Protein source that is easy to take with you and/or store in a drawer at the office are the Starkist foil pack tunas. There are various flavors. Good protein for low calories. Also, Lite & Fit Greek yogurt is a good low cal protein source.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
