Don’t want to share WLS - similar surgery?

Recommended Posts

I have told a few people but don’t feel I need to share with everyone. I will be in a couple of scenarios where it will be awkward not to share. Day before surgery dinner with my daughters best friend and her mom and then post surgery with my sitter who is helping a bit. I thought I remember reading someone talking about a surgery that was similar in terms of pre op or recovery?

Thanks!

Hernia repair surgery is very similar in the diets and incisions. I googled it to make sure. After reading that I plan to tell people that I had hernia repair surgery and that I lost so much weight from the pre and post op diets that I decided to keep it up. Not eating much for 7 weeks will definitely reduce your portion sizes when you do start eating again.

Have a great day!

I'm a very private person, and lower BMI. I'm not telling others because I want to preserve my privacy, and because I don't want to hear their opinions (even my PCP tried to suggest "diet and exercise" to me, like she hasn't seen my yoyoing with that for 25 years).

I'm telling my husband, and no one else. I'm calling in sick to work (thankfully I have that kind of flexibility!), and I've already advertised around work that I'm starting a "cleanse".

It always fascinates me to read that others hide their surgery. Whether you tell anyone or not, people are going to notice you're quickly losing weight! I owned it. I told everyone - sometimes even strangers! Of all the people I told, I only received ONE negative reaction. It was a very overweight woman who thought surgery was "cheating". She's out of my life now so whatever.

I also realize I'm exercising a bit of white male privilege when telling everyone about my WLS & not worrying about their reaction.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
