Drinking protein "shots"?

Recommended Posts

Hey all!

I've grown an aversion to Protein Drinks (Premier was the only one I could stomach and now it makes me sick) and I'm still feeling a lot of restriction with solid foods so I can't get much in. I know I'm not getting all of my daily Protein and I'm paying the price with Hair loss, fatigue, low weight loss, etc. I have a bag of GENEPRO protein and I can't stand the taste of it mixed in drinks and food but I think I could handle quickly drinking a "shot" of Protein Powder mixed with Water or some other liquid. I have 2oz cups I can mix it in, kind of like the cups with protein that they give you in the hospital after surgery.

If anyone has tried this, what was the result? Is there an issue with quickly drinking 30g of protein? Just a texture/taste thing?

Taste and tolerance for foods comes with time. It's trial and error.

If shakes are making you sick and you can't stand the taste then why drink them? It might be time to figure how you can get real food in with your restriction.

Protein shot: Mixing 2oz of Water with a scoop of protien is going to be thick in texture. Sounds horrible to me.

Some things to try:

eat six small meals a day of real food.

Soft stage foods, canned chicken etc may help.

Choose lean meat. Its higher the protein

Try nature's best Isopure zero carb flavored protein water - 40 grams protein. If the taste is too much add water to it. (you may hate this product just as much)

wishing you the best to find what works.

Chuck that GENEPRO in the trash. It is snake oil and a worthless Protein. Stick with a tried and true whey protein that doesn't have a recent lawsuit loss. Optimum Nutrions Gold Standard is my go-to powder. I don't make shakes though, I make protein cakes. Scoop of protein powder, baking powder, and coffee creamer. 30-45 seconds in the microwave and done.

Hi jenn1, thanks for the reply. I'm almost 4 months post-op and my restriction is still incredibly high which makes it difficult to get in the Protein I need. Believe me when I say I'd much rather have real food than a protein supplement. I'll give the protein Water a try.

Thanks! I'll check out that powder. My nutritionist required us to use GENEPRO for our supplement and I've also read the lawsuit against the company. Very interesting stuff.

In my experience, NUT's are nothing more than smoothie recipe repositories and product pushers. Very little education or just very lazy. The ones I had to deal with didn't bother to pay attention to files that clearly show a food allergy when they were making their recipe pamphlets to pass out to patients. But if I wanted to buy a bag or pouch of product, she had every sales pitch and marketing blurb memorized.

Any NUT that requires you to use a specific brand of a product is shady as hell and needs their @ss handed to them IMO.

I'll sometimes mix a scoop of Protein powder in with just enough Water to form a paste when I need to top up my numbers but just don't feel like eating.

Nothing beats 25 grams of protein for 2 tablespoons worth of effort.

I am not sure on this but was discussing Protein with a friend who is a nurse and thought it might be worth adding here. You can consume high protein in a shot or a paste but your body might not absorb it all. Spreading your protein out through the day increases the absorption. I believe she had read that it was approximately 23 grams of protein and a time anything over that is not used...

Might be worth checking into

What protein are you using that you are getting 25 grams of protein in only 2 tablespoons?

This has been proven false many times. Your Nurse friend might want to check the research.

Gene pro is awful. I just returned it. I’m looking for a Protein Water that actually tastes good... anyone? It’s my only source of protein since I can’t eat without it getting stuck and throwing it up. And that’s purée. . If I get 3 or 4 teaspoons of something down all day I’m happy Water won’t go through easily bcus of what’s stuck. Then that comes up too. Anyone else have that?

Necter unflavored with Mios/Crystal lite or in broth/cream of Soup, bipro Water, New Whey Protein Shots. You can also add Faifa milk or Orgain almond milk with your powder to make it more palatable and get extra Protein.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
