Shooting pain in the stomach area

Recommended Posts

I am going to call my doctor this morning, but I just wanted to know if anyone has heard of this or experienced this.

I was banded August 23rd and in the past two months there have been two times where I have severe stomach pain that lasts about 15-20 min and then goes away. The pain is all throughout my middle stomach area.

Well yesterday afternoon I had another episode then a few hours later I had another one then this morning I had one more. This scared me because I never had so many episodes in a row like that. Anyone have any thoughts.

Kim, you really should contact your banding surgeon and ask him. Try to make notes and give him as much info. as you can. Do these episodes hit after you eat or just any old time? Did these hit after you got a fill? Could you be too tight? Are you running any temperature? Does the area feel hot to the touch, is it tender? Do you feel nauseated with these spells? Do you still have your gallbladder? Please follow up and find out what's going on. Let us know and Best of luck to you!

The episodes hit at odd times and they did start after my fills. When I got my first fill the doc filled it too tight so he had to remove some saline, but this pain is different then the pain I felt when the band was too full.

No, I'm not running a temperature and the area isn't tender or hot. Yeah, I do feel a little nausea because the pain is so intense I feel like I want to throw up. Yes, I still have my gallbladder and that was one thing they check and did an ultrasound for before my surgery.

One night I had a pain so terrible that I thought I was going to die! I could not move, I had to sleep sitting up....guess what it was....GAS! I took a gas X and was relieved immediately!!! Not saying that is what's going on with you, but since being banded, Gas has taken on a whole new meaning/feeling...I am not an expert, so please check with your doctor.

So my doc had me come in for an upper GI today. He said that everything looked good, my pouch wasn't herniated or stretched and the band was exactly where it was suppose to be. He doesn't know what was causing my pain, but he did say because I am chewing my food more and since my new food of choice lately is carrots and you really have to chew them that I maybe taking in more air then normal and it may be building up gas in my stomach. I cant believe it can be that painful!

Even though they couldn't find anything wrong with me I am glad to see my insides weren't exploding and my band was still in place.

It was cool to see the liquid they make you drink flow through the band and fill up in the stomach.

Thanks for all your support!

Darcy (Nightengale2u) had really bad stomach pain that sounds similar to yours. She'll probably see your post and respond, but you might want to send her a PM.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
