Your insurance must require you to have something wrong in order to have them pay for it. I am also fat but healthy and I didn't need anything to be wrong with with me just a bmi of 40. I just made it with a bmi of 41. Call your insurance and see what their requirements are.

Hi thank you for your opinion I will call my insurance to verify what they require to approve for the surgery. My BMI is 35 im eating a lot so I can gain weight.....

Many insurance plans that cover wls require a bmi of 40 or 35 with other co-morbidities. If you have good health, you may not qualify unless you gain another 25 pounds.

I had my surgery done in Mexico, where a bmi of 35 is not an issue. The cost was $4,600 plus $450 airfare for myself and a companion. My insurance deductible was $7,000, and max out of pocket was $8,500, so I saved a few thousand going there. Also, I didn't have to endure a year of jumping through hoops. I am glad for that.

If your insurance won't cover the surgery, maybe you could start saving today for a cash pay surgery in the future. There are surgery centers in the US that will do the surgery for around 10K. That is a lot of money, but not compared to what we spend for a used car that we plan to keep for 4-5 years at the most.

Good luck!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
