Pre-op diet not as strict

Recommended Posts

I attended my last pre-op MD visit and pre op visit today which included a class on the pre and post op diet. I was expecting something way tougher based on my reading here. What I received was:

PreOp:

Starting 2 weeks prior to surgery date, daily diet is:

-3x nectar or Unjury Protein Shake

-1/2 cup oatmeal or cream of wheat

-1/2 cup of unsweetened applesauce

-1 cup of vegetables

-1/2 cup of light n fit or carb master yogurt

-1 cup of low fat Soup

This is not an "or" list, but rather I'm supposed to eat everything on that list daily on the 2 week pre op diet.

-1 day prior to surgery = Clear Liquids only.

Curious as to why different surgeons have such drastically different requirements for the pre op diet?

Also of note, for post op, they only have you on clear liquids for the first 2 days, then full liquids and purees from day 3-20, soft foods (meaning can be cut with a fork) from week 3-6, then all normal food after 6 weeks with the exception of bread/rice/pasta, which cannot have until 12 weeks.

I really think just the program and the preference of the surgeons. You are very lucky. Mine, I was required to buy through my program. It's all Bariatric Advantage products. I'm allowed 4 shakes and two bars daily, except the day before surgery I am not to have the bars and to replace them with shakes. The only other food allowed is one banana or 1 cup of fat free milk daily and sugar free jello/pops. Best of luck to you.

Do it first. See if it's not harder than it looks. Temptation is an interesting thing. But keep us posted.

To answer your question.

Pre op diet varies. On the hospital. The surgeon. The weight of the individual .. health factors. But all are based on lower carb and calories to shrink the liver.

My pre op diet was three meals low carb. I chose to go on another liquid diet to shrink my liver. I was not asked to lose weight. Just not gain. I lost anyway. Surgery was great. Liver good!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
