Very Happy with my Journey so far

Recommended Posts

I have had such a great experience with gastric bypass I needed to share it with people who are concerned or are having doubts. There are a lot of posts out there where people have had a hard time before during and after the surgery so I thought I should set the record straight.

My experience was great from the start. The liquid diet the week before surgery was a lot easier than I thought it would be and I lost 15lbs. The surgery was uneventful with no pain other than hurting when I coughed, laughed or rolled over in bed but that only lasted about a week. At first I found myself either eating too fast or too much but your body punishes you for that so you learn quickly when to stop. As far as eating too much a good rule of thumb is as soon as you start to feel full STOP. If you still have food in your mouth you need to spit it out, don't try to swallow it.

My primary reason for having the surgery was to cure my diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol and it has. I had my A1C checked this week and it was at 5.8 and I have been off all meds since I started the liquid diet the week before surgery.

For those of you reading this who are worried about the procedure and your life after the procedure just remember to follow your doctors instructions, eat what you should and stay away from things you shouldn't eat. Watch your portion sizes and slow down. Stay clear of all carbonated beverages and get plenty of exercise. I believe by following my doctors plan is why I had such an easy time.

Good Luck to all, I hope you are all successful in meeting your goals.

Here is my latest progress picture. The first picture was taken 8/20 but I was still at 265 lbs on the day I started my liquid diet (8/31/17) so I use that as the start date.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
