Was this a PB? Warning: Disgusting

Recommended Posts

I ate lunch and then I ate a little something else sweet (I'm not going to say what for risk of being flamed). I knew better and now I definitely know better and it wont happen again. Afterwards, I was sitting at my desk typing an email and I burped and then a little bit of (sorry, it's gross) vomit came out my nose. It was just a little bit but it was awful. I went to the bathroom for fear of what was next to come but nothing else happened. Was this a PB? Now I can't get the smell out of my nose and it's making me want to really vomit. Any advice on that? I tried putting a little bit of scented lotion at the edge of my nostrils but that didn't really help. Do you think it would be ok to chew some gum for a few minutes to get rid of the smell?

Oh, sweetie! That sounds awful. I haven't experienced anything like that yet, but it was my understanding that "PB's" aren't actually vomit. I think the food involved in a PB doesn't stay down long enough to become vomit. Am I right, y'all?

Since you don't yet have any fills I'm going to guess you don't have much restriction. If it tastes/smells like vomit, it isn't a "PB." So, chances are that you had what you might call a "wet burp," and actually did bring up some of what you had eaten.

A "PB" refers to clearing things that are stuck in the pouch, or at least the thick saliva that your body produces. Yes, true, it doesn't make it to the stomach. It's unable to clear the restricted area of the esophagus (stoma). So, when you "PB" you're only bringing up whatever got stuck and anything you swallowed since. This won't have the typical vomit taste or smell because there is no stomach acid or digested food in it. Usually, if it has any taste at all, it tastes like what got stuck.

I'd also wager you had a little but of actual puke vs. a PB because normally there's a fair amount of discomfort, or downright pain, involved in the whole being stuck/having to PB process. Our bodies try to unstick what's stuck, and this doesn't feel good at all!

A lot of us have agreed that the term "PB" sucks and is generally not accurate... I sure as hell never had a burp that took an hour and hurt like hell. Perhaps I should host a "rename the PB" contest. :)

Yeah, I know what you mean by a wet burp.....I've always called them yucky burps since I was a kid. LOL I've never had them come out my nose though, that was weird. Good to know that PBs don't cause the vomit smell and taste although they sound painful. Thanks.

If you are going to rename the PB you could call it what we do at our house.... a "hitch hiker". When a burp comes up and brings something with it, that's what we call it. I know it's all kinda grim.

But... I have PBed and it went into my nose, and it reminded me of vomit. Anytime I have ever gotten vomit (or food.. rice goes up in me when I use to inhale and don't have tonsils/uvula/adnoids) they all have the same burning acidy feel. Smell would be vomit I think though. I never have a bad smell, its just burning and acidic.

Generally though, you would feel the pain of PBing before you have it going up to your nose :)

Yeah, productive head spinning around barf-o-rama would describe it better for me.

That does indeed sound like one of those icky wet burps we all have from time to time. That's happened to me when I wasnt banded.

I think I have this whole PB thing down pretty good now. I am at my sweet spot so I have to be particularly vigilant of what goes in, what time of day, etc. I tend to be tight in the morning and loosen up in the evening. I have found that often (especially eating out) my first two to three bites will get stuck and have to come back up and then everything if FINE after that. I think I have perfected the art of the non-barf PB....there is very little discomfort because I am very easy on myself and just let it kindof roll out as opposed to stomach contractions and "heaving". There is definitely a science to it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
