I am wondering about Protein. Everyone seems to talk about it being hard to get enough. I am three days post op and I make a shake with carnation Breakfast (sugar free) with 1 cup of simply smart milk and one scoop of whey protein for a total of 38 grams of protein. My doctor said get at least 60 grams of protein a day. Two of these shakes gives me 76 grams. Am I doing this right ? I drink chicken broth and Water in between. I don't want to screw things up so soon. I also want to know if it is ok to add benifiber to my liquids? ?. Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Bekkie:confused::(

GNC (and others, too, I'm sure) carries a drink called Isopure. It's no carbs, no sugar, no fat and 40 grams of Protein. I keep one in the reefer and every time I think about it, I stop and get a swig or two. But it actually doesn't taste too bad and doesn't have that heavy feel that alot of the protein powders do. My favorite is the Pineapple/Orange flavor.

I am 2 days post-op. I think in this stage it is easy to get the Protein in via shakes/drinks. I am guessing it is harder when you get to the solid food stage. For now, I am planning on keeping my breakfast/lunch mostly Protein shakes, then having a small dinner w/my family when I get to that stage. I am constantly "on the go" and don't have time to sit down for long meals during the day.

Dont' have any info on the Benefiber though. Good luck!

Through research, I found that whey Protein ISOLATE is much purer than whey Protein CONCENTRATE and will mix in with a spoon (concentrate will need blended in so as not to clump).

I have found great buys on chocolate malt and belgium chocolate whey protein isolate at Amazon.com (and free shipping!). The Slim Fast Lo Carb shake in a can isn't bad and has about 20 grams of protein too--easier to carry to work!

I also use unflavored isolate in puddings, Jello, etc. and the same website (unjury.com) actually has chicken broth whey protein isolate, which tastes pretty good! Again, 20 grams of protein per scoop/package.

I never cared about protein before--but am counting Proteins daily to make sure I get 60+!

Good luck to you...

hi bekkie,

i've found the pre-packaged Isopure shakes (50 gms) mixed with water/ice to taste like regular milk shakes. i like the dutch chocolate and the vanilla. i mix the vanilla one with either banana's, berries, etc. they also have other flavors.

i use this when i am tight and cant take in too much food.

i also use the whey Protein that comes in test tubes. it's from IDS. you can either get the 25gms or 42 gms size.

since i was banded...i've concentrated on making sure i got both Protein in and Vitamins and i swear this is why i havent had issues with hair loss. i also feel great (not tired, etc)

good luck

I am adding benefibre to my Protein Shakes (I had the surgery on 10.10.07) and find that it mixes in really well and I can't taste it so it is great.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
