Change of surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hello, this is my first post, very new to all this. I'm in the middle of my required bariatric program before having the procedure. If everything goes as planned I'll be having surgery around March...I been prepping for the sleeve but it seems like my doctors are leaning me towards the bypass. Is there anyone out there that has changed their mind about the type of surgey? What made you decide?

I went into my first appointment wanting VSG but left set on RNY. My surgeon said he personally doesn’t think VSG is a great fit for most people, especially patients who are morbidly obese. He said that the gold standard is the RNY and that his patients tend to do better long term going that route. I also have severe acid reflux and GERD so he said VSG would make that worse (I can’t even imagine it worse than it is now!) but he told me that RNY can most of the time completely take care of it. So it was a no brainer after that that I would just do gastric bypass. After reading of so many people who have had to get revisions from VSG to RNY it helped reinforce that decision too! I hope that helps a little, either way it is great to ask questions and research both to see what you think will be best for your body!

Thank you! I also have reflux, and on occasion the nightmare of GERD. This was a big decision so I'm trying to make it the right one. I appreciate your input :)

if you already have GERD, it's a no-brainer. Get the bypass.

I changed my mind. Initially, I was going for the sleeve but I decided to do the bypass because I tend to be a sweet eater. I'm hoping I'll get the dumping syndrome so I will be strongly discouraged to eat things like donuts and cake.

I definitely think that if you have GERD now you will probably have it even worse with the sleeve.. I personally don't have any acid reflux so I'm not too worried about that. But from what I've heard age is also a factor, if you're younger and/or want more kids in the future than my surgeon recommended VSG because there's no malnurtionment that the mother would have during the pregnancy which means less risk for abnormalities. I also like the idea of the sleeve because I'll be able to eat like a normal person eventually (not portion wise but variety wise). Like years from now when I'm in maintenance if I want to enjoy a treat out with family I can and won't have to risk dumping being at my goal weight. But every decision is personal. I was on the fence for awhile too.. Best of luck with whatever you choose! :)

Most bypass people can eat anything as well. Only about a third of us dump. I never have.

I wouldn't say most.. It's the biggest thing that surgeons and dieticians talk about when they compare the differences. That's why they recommend the RNY for people with issues with sweets and sugars because the dumping makes you feel so bad that it will defer you from eating it again.. My mom is 10 years out with the rny and still gets it from certain foods... But like I said above, everyones journey is different. It's what she thinks should be best for herself.

most of us don't dump. I never have. I can eat sugars with no problem (unfortunately....)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
