Fruit

Recommended Posts

I’m 3 weeks out and craving fruit so badly. How far out did you start eating fruit and what did you choose? My other issue is that I’m not pooping at all (TMI, I know) and I feel like fruit might help that along. I’m taking Linzess and drinking a laxative tea with no results. I have a bottle of mag citrate, but I’m trying to avoid it.

I didn't eat fruit for most of the weight loss period, too much sugar for me, but check your plan. Stay away from seeds because they can cause issues. Blueberries have a low sugar content.

Try adding Fiber through benefiber or psyllium husks. Later on chia seeds are good too, but probably not for the first six months.

I started with applesauce and puréed pears. I’m over 6 months and still have issues with Constipation. I use Benefiber 2x’s a day. As long as I use it I go once a day. I miss taking any and I don’t go the next day. I actually bought the Walmart brand of the Benefiber. It’s a little cheaper.

Oh and I didn’t start eating it till I was in the puréed stage.

If you haven't had a bowel movement in three weeks post-op, follow-up with your surgeon's office. They usually want to make sure you're not having any issues with that, so keep them in the loop on what you're trying and what you're eating. Mine asked me directly at my 1wk post-op if I've been passing gas and having bowel movements.

Are you using any bariatric-specific Protein Powder (like Bariatric Advantage)? I was told not to use that for the initial post-op, since the make up of the fiber content can cause Constipation.

Have you tried prune baby food?

To be honest, I never listened to the Drs about this and had fruit pretty much immediately (freshly squeezed juice of 1 orange) on a daily basis. When I was allowed solids I ate 1 portion of fruit every day. I think that's why I rarely had issues with Constipation.

I’ve had a bowel movement since surgery, but only because I drank mag citrate. I don’t know if it’s because I’ve drastically reduced my caloric intake or what.
I’m on the soft food phase, so I can eat a lot of things. I’ll try adding benefiber for now and see if it helps.

Yikes! The acid content of the orange juice would have caused me no end of grief. And OJ has no fiber so it won't help with any constipation.

I ended up getting watermelon at the grocery store yesterday and had a small piece when I felt like my sugar was dropping. What a difference!! I’ve also started adding a couple chunks of mango into my Protein Shakes and that’s helped too.
I did have a light bulb moment last night and realized that I’m hardly getting any calories. My Protein shakes have 120 calories, so 3 of those a day isn’t nearly enough. I’ve been so focused on protein and Water that I wasn’t even thinking about calories. Now I have a better idea of what all I need to manage and have some food changes to make.
This whole process makes me feel stupid. It’s like everything I know went out the window and I’m learning everything new.

I have chronic Constipation, I use the laxative from Dollar Tree store. I usually have to take 4-6 tiny tablets. I also use 2 tablets of stool softener, the combination works great for me. Good luck.

If I have fruit right now, it's applesauce, and for Constipation, the only thing that helped me after surgery was Smooth Moves Tea. Holy cow, that was an experience...nothing, I mean, nothing was working. The tea...the next morning, life went on. I keep it in the house. I'd found out about it after my back surgery last year. I jotted a note down, just in case! Only, I didn't have an issue until this surgery. OMG, it was a life saver!

I've had Constipation almost as long as I can remember. I even joined a medical group as a guinea pig to try a new drug and was tracked for 6 months, the medicine was not working either. I've been using a stool softener and a laxative, I've seen Smooth Move tea, but never tried it. Thank you so much for the info, I am definitely going to check it out.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
