Able to drink like before surgery

Recommended Posts

I'm somewhat concerned at the fact I'm able to drink Water at a very normal, pre-op pace. I see so many having issue getting the proper amount of fluids in, whereas I can blow through 96+ oz of water in a day, plus Protein Shakes, broth, and Popsicles. I was sleeved on October 30th, so I'm a little over a week of recovery. I truly thought I'd have more of a resistance to Fluid intake; which worries me about actual food intake and how much I'll be able to consume.

Are you taking in more fluids than are recommended? Maybe talk with your nutritionist or dietician?

I don't think the amount is the OP's concern, but the ability to take normal size slugs and feel no resistance.

Be careful chugging too fast and too much because you won't have enough time to know if too much is going to cause you to suddenly upchuck. This may change too as you heal and swelling goes down - remember the staple line takes at least 6 weeks to heal and sometimes 3 months. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should throw caution to the wind.

The pyloric valve at the junction between the stomach and intestine does not hold liquids - it passes through, solids will give you resistance.

Good luck.

Thank you. That's exactly my concern. I was very diligent with sipping when I got home from the hospital, but noticed that even when I lapsed and took a bigger drink, I didn't feel any resistance as you stated. Thankfully getting in my fluids and Protein haven't been an issue but felt like there was something different going on versus other sleevers.

I can take decent size swigs as well. At first, NO it was more like swallowing aquarium gravel!!!! lol. And during that time I got a little dehydrated too. So I am glad I can take close to normal swallows.

I'm 7 weeks out, and I can take normal size drinks. Don't worry about it - it's not a reflection of how much food you can eat. When you are on solids, you'll feel the restriction! I can only eat about 3 oz of protein!

Congrats on becoming a Post Oper. I had the exact same issue. I thought like you.... uh oh is it not working for me. I got so concerned that I called my surgeon. He said its perfectly fine, as long as I didn't drink carbonated drinks or have any food in my stomach before drinking. Like you I have no issues getting my liquids or Protein in. You will feel it when you start eating FOR SURE! I feels like you dropped a boulder in your stomach if you are overdoing it. Meaning either eating to fast, too much or not the right thing. We all heal differently and can tolerate different foods at different times. Consider this time as your learning stage. Congrats on your sleeve.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
