Fullness Hormone

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I am very new. I have been reading a lot about bariatric surgery. I haven't gone to my first appt., it is tomorrow. I have read that a pro to the vertical sleeve is that it stops the hunger causing hormone. Does RNY do the same thing. It seems since it is left and reattached that the hormone would just run out into the intestine, but it would still be absorbed and cause hunger. This is one of the biggest questions I have on deciding which surgery.

It seems like hunger is similar between bypass patients and those with sleeves. Early on, sleevers that don't have good acid control will feel hungry (acid makes you feel "hungry"), but that isn't necessarily a long term issue.

The decision between sleeve and bypass is usually made based on GERD, diabetes, and food addictions. If a patient has any of those in a significant way, the bypass is possibly a better choice.

Ask your doctor who will have your records, health history and experience in both procedures. My understanding of my sleeve is different than the post above; which doesn't mean anyone is wrong, but that the information you got from your doctor will be specifically for you.

Good luck!

I had RYN 6 months ago and have never felt hungry since. I may feel weak at times when I haven’t eaten in a while. I’ve lost 110 pounds in that short time. I’ve read that we have a lot less gherlin (sp) moving around so we don’t feel hungry. I wouldn’t use that as your factor for deciding which to have. I think for higher weight loss and longer term weight loss, in general, RNY is the way to go.

So, Annie, what was different? Hunger level, criteria for choosing a surgery? Both?

The more I think about this post/question.. the more I realize that I haven't seen it addressed.

Who DOES experience more hunger? IS there a difference?

One of my surgery-buds (had procedure the same day) has a bypass and she says she is frequently hungry. I have a sleeve, and some days I'm hungry, others I'm not at all. We are 7 months postop.

After reading lots of posts on lots of forums I would have to say it's an individual thing. Some people feel hungry some don't. I had the bypass and I don't feel hungry. Every now and then I feel a little nauseous and realise I haven't eaten and it's empty. The removal of the ghrelin hormone I think is the same. Some people and now and then I'm one feel head hunger. It's not real hunger it's just wanting to eat for the sake of eating. When I get like that it's usually boredom and I eat sugar free jelly. I am also 11 weeks and lost almost 100lbs

Thank you! That is the hormone I kept reading about when it came to the sleeve. And I wasn't sure how or if it had any less effect with RNY. I am leaning more toward RNY. I have my first appointment today.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
