BelleOfBatonRouge 80 Posted November 8, 2017 At my surgery consult my doctor told me he didn't think my insurance mandated a 6 month supervised diet, and that we could most likely do the surgery during winter break. Well, my insurance does. I feel heartbroken, and like I have been sucker punched in the stomach. I allowed myself to feel hopeful that I could jump on that train to change my life and be healthy and able to do things like run. I have been fat my whole life- and I feel like I was so close to the new, healthier life, that I feel shattered. I know in theory 6 months shouldn't be a long time, but it really messes with my school schedule, especially if I have to wait six months before even submitting approval. I am in law school, so the ABA sets a maximum amount of classes that I can miss (its not like undergrad where a doctors note would take care of the school issue). 1 Cath226 reacted to this
BrownsugarNY 30 Posted November 8, 2017 Awwww I’m sorry to hear that. Call the insurance company and ask if once you’re approved how long is the approval valid for. Be careful of when your coverage resets for the next year which means you could be paying more out of pocket. In my case once I️ get an approval from my insurance company it will be valid for 2 years.

BelleOfBatonRouge 80 Posted November 8, 2017 @BrownsugarNY luckily in this case (I guess the only lucky part) is I have health insurance through my school, so my insurance coverage period goes from August 14 2017 to August 13 2018. So even with the delay I’m (hopefully) looking at a May surgery date.
Nesh 23 Posted November 10, 2017 I️ totally feel your pain. I️ was just told the same thing BUT I️ called my insurance and found the policy for bariatric surgery and there is nothing that specifies 6 months. So maybe you should call your insurance just to confirm! Don’t give up cause if you don’t do it now, 6 months later you’ll be in the same situation wishing you stayed the course! Good luck! I had to wait longer than expected because I was a smoker and I felt sucker-punched too when I learned late in the game. It's disheartening because you're emotionally invested and ready to go and then suddenly you have to put the brakes on. You'll get through it! Just wanted to say sorry and I understand. I got in a car wreck my second year and had to miss more than 20% in a few classes. Just got supporting documents from the doctor. If it’s an ABA school, the rules should be the same...
