HELP WITH LIQUID ONLY STAGE

Recommended Posts

HI ALL.

Ok, so I had my surgery on 10/30 and all went well, got released the next day. Not in too much pain, have had slight nausea, but have been able to control it. I'm six days out and getting ready to finish the ALL liquid STAGE, thank god. Have any of you others been so depleted, that making the bed, getting dressed, brushing your teeth has been a monumental task? I know we have little to no calories on this phase but OMG I didn't think that just drinking Water, Kool Aid, Jello was going to be this hard. What all have you done to combat this? I literally feel like my heart is going to explode when I even try and go to the bathroom, because of the amount of exertion I'm putting out based on the lack of calories?????

Any thoughts/suggestions would be great.

Thank you

No Protein Shakes? I was allowed those and liquids, it takes awhile to adjust to so little calories, I nearly passed out a couple times. It does improve, I still need a nap daily and I am 13 days out. Hang in there.

No, my doctors haven't wanted me to do the Protein Shakes yet. They want me to concentrate on JUST liquid so Water, pop Scylces, Jello, Kool Aid. :( I swear, Tuesday starting the second stage can't get here fast enough, LOL. I totally get the naps during the day. I've had the best naps these last six days than I've ever had in my life :)

Ha...I don't do ABJD but was heavy into sixth scale Barbie scenes - I still have my dolls and loved sewing fashions and doing photo shoots - travel doll diaries.... I love anything involving fabric.

Can you have Protein Jello? You can order it from Amazon with quick delivery.

I do have my sugar free Jello, I even asked our dietician about adding some Protein Powder to it, but she said not to yet, which I thought was a little strange.

Oh that's awesome. I still have that scale in the ABJDs, and LOVE finding props for them. I wish I could sew, can barely sew buttons on regular clothes, LOL. How long have you been in the hobby?

You aren’t getting any protein.. no wonder you are so weak. I’m 12 days post op for the sleeve. After surgery I was allowed, chicken broth, Jello, popsicles, Protein Water and Protein Shakes. I needed to get 60-70 grams of protein a day during the post op liquid stage. I drank my protein shakes and protein water then filled in with the broth, jello, etc. I was able to keep up with my protein and I never felt tired.

Maybe you need to call your surgeons office to be sure you aren’t allowed protein shakes. I would at least drink some protein water.

I hope you feel better soon!

Ok I just saw you asked about the protein. Well, I’m sure thats why you are tired..

Hmm... that is strange. This is a bariatric Jello by Bariatric Advantage, but I guess it would be no to that too.

It would be interesting to try, maybe after I’m at the second phase on Tuesday, I might have to get some. I didn't even know there was such a thing.

OH yeah, I know it's from lack of protein. Even my home nurse that came on Friday said to just do water/liquids. They don't seem to be concerned with the protein till Tuesday. There is no way in hell I'd be able to walk the 30 minutes they want either??? Not with lack of calories. I'm not hungry so that's good. What all did you guys do about trying to get in the 64 ounces of liquids??? Our dietician has been hard core when she talks to me about YOU HAVE TO DRINK 64 OUNCES a day. I'm averaging about 40 and that's it. I just can't get anymore into me, LOL. I talked to one of my other health workers in the Bariatric team and she was ok with just the 40oz so that made me feel better, but I talked to her on Wednesday. I think I'll call back on Monday to see what she says, maybe she'll let me have some Protein Shake before Tuesday.

Tuesday is right around the corner so when you start getting Protein you’ll feel better. I couldn’t get enough Water in the beginning either. I called the bariatric nurse and she told me to try the best I can and she knows it’ll get easier each day. She did remind me how important fluids are. Dehydration is a serious problem.

Be sure you are tracking your liquids. I tracked more carefully and realized I was getting more than I thought. Just keep sipping all the time. Remember the popscicles or whatever you are taking in counts as part of your oz’s of fluids.

It’ll get better. The first week is the most difficult. Sip sip sip sip

YES, not too much longer :) I've done the popsicles too, my husband keeps wanting to steal them, and i"m like NOOOO. Oh, I'm tracking for sure. I took the drink cup that I had in the hospital, it's a 20 ounce bottle, and I'm trying to do two of them, along with Jello, Kool Aid, Popsicles, broth.

Oh so for the second stage, one thing we are allowed to have is creamy oatmeal. I have the Low sugar Brown sugar Quaker Oatmeal. I'm a little concerned about eating it whole, so was going to take a pack and grind in the food processor first before making it. Figured that would be better, smoother than just the regular grains. Do you think that's a good idea? I also get to have Boxed mashed potatoes (to be maid with Fairlife milk) pudding, cream of wheat, Yogurt, smooth Soups, shakes. And everything that has to be made, using the FairLife milk to make instead of Water, and adding powder Protein to EVERYTHING :)

I wasn't allowed Protein Drinks on my liquid phase either. It was Water, tea, broth (my wife made it from scratch), sugar free Jello and sugar free ice pops. It was a full time job to get my 64 ounces in each day. I'd just zip, zip all day long. You will experience fatigue and don't fight the feeling to nap. It'll help you to recover.

Meg. You will love the next stage. I am eating everything you have listed except I haven’t had oatmeal yet. I’m thinking it might need to be grinded like you said.. I just haven’t done it yet. I LOVE Fairlife nonfat Protein milk. Sometimes I’ll have a small glass before bed. But like you I mix it in everything I can.

You’re going to do great!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
