Binge eating treatment b4 RNYGB

Recommended Posts

I see many people discuss food relationships in post-sugery forums. While I'm scared, I know I did the right thing by taking a year in a binge eating treatment program to give me the tools & skils to be successful long-term. I will promote this every chance I get. I did not want to go thru surgery only to rebound. My program taught me how to regard food as other than a reward system or addiction. I do still need the surgery to lose the weight & control my diabetes. The program taught me to maintain and follow a plan. We all should have this training before surgery to better influence success. I will share so much more.

I agree it's a really important part of the journey. I have a lap band and was very unsuccessful. I'm now scheduled for revision to bypass next month. I have been through an eating disorder program and feel like I now have the tools to be more successful this time. Sadly I am now 63 and the support groups at the eating disorder clinic aren't covered by medicare. I wish I could find a once a week support group instead if once a month.

Addiction? What do you mean? I am not addicted. I only eat because I am lonely. Or stressed. Or worried. Or celebrating. Or cross. Or busy. Or bored. Or hungry. Or watching tv. Or on the phone. Or tired. Or contented. Or to relax. Or ... oh. I see. 😉

I agree. Unless I get my mindful eating practices back, I am going to have a much harder time of this surgery...

Thanks

I hope they are out there for you, they can't be easy to find. A therapist from my binge eating program went out on her own and is running a weekly group, otherwise all I oul have is the after care program.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
