Several questions about post op RNY down the road

Recommended Posts

How common are teeth problems ? Ive been reading about horror stories about peoples teeth rotting out and losing many teeth in their 20s/30s. I totally understand this can happen with a Calcium deficiency , but does this happen to people with the RNY frequently and or for reasons other than calcium deficiency ?

Is vomiting a part of life post op ? Is it something I should expect several times a week/month for the rest of my life ?

I know about dumping syndrome. But is diarrhea something youll have to deal with for a long time ? Or is this something that is more likely to be a temporary issue after surgery and or situation based on what you ate ?

Is having to chew foods to a paste/emulsification a permanent thing or something you have to deal with for a few months/years ?

Appreciate any advice, starting to get presurgical jitters

Congrats on getting rny! I had mine done 9/13. Ive had no vomiting. I had diarhea the day after surgery, then again 3 weeks ago from stomach flu. Usually people are having really bad Constipation. I did, until the stomach flu!
I chew a lot of things to emulsification but other things just normal. You will get a feel for it. I havent heard about the teeth thing. Possibly because of excessive vomiting? Or Vitamin deficiency? Not sure. Havent had dumping yet either. I stay away from the foods, so far, that could cause it. Im too scares!
Youre gonna do great! Follow the rules and u will be fine! Good luck!

I have never heard anything about teeth rotting. Sounds like a myth to me. Follow the program and you (and your teeth!) will be fine.

I don't think those things would happen unless they're not keeping up with their Vitamins, not brushing their teeth and if they're still trying to overeat. Then again maybe there are other things that would cause excessive vomiting.

The only thing I've gone through was diarrhea and Constipation. Then nausea. I've had no problems with my teeth.

I’m from a family of rny-ers and we’re all nurses. I’ve NEVER ever even heard of teeth rotting out, & we all spend lots of time researching every single thing we do in life (so not sure why I’ve never come across that) but I would be cautious about whoever you read that from.

Re chewing, I am only at 3 wks post op and generally chew 15-20 times to be good, but I think it’s just a general rule to follow so the last bite has ample time to “slide down” and for the next bite not to clump up in your esophagus. My mom had rny 12 years ago & I watch her eat & while she eats might eat a bit slower then before surgery, I never really see her lingering in the chewing stage.

I throw up sometimes, when I’ve eaten something too fast or when something just doesn’t agree with me. I’m 8 weeks post op and this has probably happened about 5 times. Only one of those times was the vomiting urgent/involuntary. The other times it was just clear to me that I was going to be very unhappy until whatever it was came back up, so I made myself throw up.

Vomiting is not as bad an experience post-op as it was pre-op, at least not for me. It’s quick and painless, and because you have so little stomach acid it doesn’t burn.

I’ve read about people having trouble with their teeth after RNY but it’s not really teeth - it’s bone loss in the gums that can make teeth loosen and sometimes fall out. That’s why taking your Calcium is so important after surgery. Some people on other forums recommend getting a dexa scan to measure your bone density before surgery, then repeating it once a year. This is because it’s hard to test calcium levels with blood tests - your body needs a certain level of calcium in your blood to survive and will pull it from your bones if you aren’t absorbing enough from your dietary/vitamin intake. Dexa scans can show if you’re losing bone density due to insufficient calcium.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
