Diabetics (cure or reduce?)

Hello Charpower:

I agree that reducing weight will reduce my dependence of insulin &/or diabetic meds. but when I told my doctor that I want the Sleeve surgery, he told me that the bypass surgery is better for me because is the one that will reduce my diabetic.

my question is if somebody know the difference between both surgeries and why one is better to reduce diabetic than the other when both surgeries help to reduce weight.

My doctors recommended RNY for the same reason. It was their opinion that RNY would be better for type 2 diabetics. They all said the chances of reversing diabetes is better through RNY.

Funny, my Vitamin D was low too. Even though I'm not even one month into this journey I'm learning so much.

I was being treated with Janumet and was getting close to needing insulin. I had to stop the meds the day before surgery. I had the bypass on Aug 10th and never went back on them. My blood sugar has been under control for 11 weeks. I thought it might change once I was back on solid food but it's still in remission which is what the surgeon called it.

I'm on insulin and hoping for the same result as you. My endocrinologist said that after surgery, I would be sent home with nothing. I would be told to stop Metformin and Glipizide as well. I cannot wait!!! Type 2 Diabetes sucks.

It sure does Blackcatmatt. Not sure which country you are in so measurements might be different. My 3 months blood test was edging up to 9.5-10 Now I still take it every day just once to check and it's consistently around 4-5 and my cholesterol has dropped to 3.5 as well. Blood pressure meds have been reduced twice so it's looking good. I hope you have lots of success with your surgery too. Good luck

I am the adult child if 2 diabetics, although I'm not in your family, may I come to your reunion? I am hoping my (nearby?) W LS will be not only a tool for weight loss but a prevention for diabetes also. One of my internal medical doctors told me due to my strong family history, not only both parents but every one of my father's surviving-to-adulthood 10 siblings. That was age 35 so for 38 years I've been a fat walking-time-bomb, surgery can cut the wires before I explode. Truly would you wish diabetes on someone if they could avoid it? Wish me well, would you please? I think I can be sweet without "sugar", Your cousin-in-weight. 😝 Frust8

Hi, my family was the same genetic sweet, so my parents took care of their diets plus hours, I do not eat chocolates at all, I have never used regular sugar and I was slim until 40yrs old.

after 40s I began to gain weight and more and more then pre diabetic and last year diabetic.

i did the surgery last Monday April 30 so I cannot tell you if I will correct it or not.

I can’t tell you for sure, but my surgeon said he recommended the sleeve for me. I was on glipizide, metformin 1000 and Victoza. Prior to my pre-auth for surgery I lost 50 lbs and dropped my BG levels from 8.1 to 6.2. I quit the Victoza and the glipizide after the first day of the pre-op because I was bottoming out. I wasn’t keen on the RNY, so I’m glad he said the sleeve was good for me.

I'm almost 2 months post op and my A1C dropped from 7.8 to 6.4. I had gastric bypass because it has the best chance of permanent diabetes reversal.

But let's agree to have hope until we know different. My daddy who died in September 1998 of a massive rear wall heart attack was losing his sight, his doctor predicted he would have been legally blind by the next spring. And Mama, until she became diabetic, never could successfully lose weight. She had macular degeneration, Daddy had open angle glaucoma on his side, that is the one that is inheritable, so if I'm not careful with my vision I could end up,with only a round donut of vision
I can't eat chocolate because of allergies, really don't crave any candies and I used to make wonderful fudges for others. Lost my desire now for other Desserts. Now hope that surgery will provide the RIGHT tool for, for me this is the right time for a change in my life. And I will, dodge the bullet heredity had aimed at me😝

It seems that surgery will help. Today is my 5th day and I am ok, walking, a little delay on my liquids because I am sleepy a lot, today without pain medication and no pain at all. My stomach is moving and working a little too much, but not dumping yet. I had my Isopure Water and my son prepare gel with isopure water, and ice, I am having chicken Soup and today my first non fat Greek yogurt

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
