Recommended Posts

Hey, there seems to be a little group for a few other job types... and I know there are alot of nurses here, justthought maybe we could all have a thread to ourselves?

Is there already one? I didn't see any...

Hello Suzzzie! Three are a couple threads out there, but they haven't been active for a long time, I think your idea of a new thread is a great one!

Here's links to a couple of the others if you'd like to go check them out:

Hey Faithmd! I saw those when I was looking. They looked pretty dead... figured I'd try a new one... Like I don't already have enough threads I'm subscribed to that I try to keep up with! Hahaa!

How have YOU been?

I'm okay, stuck with weight, but it's still head issues. I have to get back to basics, me thinks. And listen to my soft stops.

I had a patient who started at 650grams, and was down to 500 grams the other night. Fun, huh?

I'm a nurse and newly banded. I go back to work next week and I'm really looking forward to it. Hopefully I'll remember to drink! Beth

Faith - You've lost quite a bit of weight! I think you're doing great!

Ariel - of course you can join. The more the merrier! Are you in school for LPN, RN, or BSN? I've been an LPN for over 4 years now, I worked as an aide for 7 years before that. I LOVE nursing! I've been working on my RN for the last 4 years... Lol. RIght now I'm working on a self-study program to get my associates, its just so hard to motivate myself to study!

Miz - Congrats on getting banded. Do people at your job know> NO one at my work knows! haha. I just called in sick for 4 days. And when I got back I just told people I couldn't lift cause I was still weak from being sick. I work with some really great nurses and they did all my lifting and such for me!

I'm a nurse too. When I was in the hospital my nurse was banded too.

What kind of nursing do you all do? I do CVICU at a teaching hospital. I just love to boss people around that have MD behind their name. Yeah they might be doctors by name but they cane be so dumb at times.

CaresaRN - I'm an LPN at a VA hospital, I work on the Oncology ward. I LOVE the med students and first year residents... NOT! We call the students "wanna be's" and the 1st year residents "baby docs"...

But hey, everyones gotta learn!!

Hi all...

I am soon to be a nurse (hopefully). 8 more weeks of my RN program and then I sit for the boards!!! I am so excited and scared. Great to see so many of us out here.

I am not sure what kind of nursing I will do. I imagine I will start on a Med/Surg floor and go from there. I always thought maternity, but now I am thinking ER/ICU/Trauma...I am just so unsure. How did you all know what you wanted to do? Do you like what you are doing? I feel way to old to be this undecisive.

Ariel-good to see you...haven't seen you in ages. How is school going????

I work as a consultant, not in clinical practice anymore. Many years in long term care. Sometimes you don't pick what you are going to do, it picks you. I took 1/2 a day off. No problem, no lifting for me anyway. Noone knows at work I am banded.

I'm getting my BSN. I'm in my junior year so I still have a little way to go. I just started my first clincal this sept. It's on a vascular floor and I Know for sure that i don't want to do that type of nursing now. I think I want to do pedi.

Hey Kay, I took a break from the boards because I was just so busy, but I'm back now. =) You have done so great with the weightloss! Way to go!

Hello everyone!! I am a nurse also. I have my BSN and am a registered nurse in labor and delivery. I am the first nurse on my unit to be banded but another nurse had a gastric bypass 2 years ago. My unit has been very supportive. I go back to work on Monday the 22nd. I started my unit orientation in June and it lasts 6 months. I just graduated from school in May and passed boards in August, so I am very lucky my unit was supportive of my surgery and let me have the time off of work. I just hope I did not forget too much of what I learned the past three months!!! I am a little nervous to go back on Monday, I feel great but we have some heavy pt's and I can't lift them just yet so that may be a little challenging. I love the area of nursing I am in, it was L&D or critical care for me. I worked 2 years in 2 different ICU's as a care partner and did an extensive externship at a level 1 trauma center in the ICU, but I chose L&D because of the unique interactions I get to have with my pt's and their families. It is also usually a very happy area to work in and the pt's are not usually "sick". I hope to loose this exra weight to allieviate my PCOS symptoms and start the family my husband of 5 years and I are hoping for. I dont have anymore excuses to not have kids soon, I got my degree, have a great husband who has a stable job in the NAVY, we bought a house, and our parents are starting to give us the "when are the grandkids coming??" talks. I chose the band becasue it does not cause any absorbtion issues and I want to have kids after this weight is gone for good!! :whoo:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
