BMI too low for insurance coverage

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I am Janell from Tennessee and am very interested in getting the gastric sleeve surgery. I right at about a 35 BMI. Unfortunately for my insurance to cover the surgery I must have a co morbidity issue with a BMI of 35-39 or a BMI over 40. This is very disheartening because as far I know I do not have any of the issues. To be at a 40 I would have to GAIN 40 pounds. Any advice on where to go from here? I have dealt with my weight my entire life and been on/taken everything possible.

Would love to hear from you!

You have the option of going to Mexico to have it done. My BMI is over 40, but I am still going to Mexico rather than dealing again with the long and expensive process of going through insurance. I will actually pay less as well because my deductible is $8000. I'll be on a flight headed to BariatricPal Hospital on Saturday morning.

Good luck with your surgery. I just wondered if anyone had any luck getting approved with Cigna any other way. I feel so hopeless!

Thank you. I have Cigna as well and I tried going through insurance last year. I hope you can figure something out.

Have your height checked again. We shrink as we age. Measuring 1-2 inches shorter could put your BMI within range. Drinking Water before a weigh in helps. Some of my records had me at 5’2” and others at 5”. I put 5” on the form at the surgeon’s office and for all pre op tests. I ended up gaining 3 pounds after I was approved for surgery, but my dietician put “declined to be weighed” on my file for insurance purposes.

Height can change everything! I was 5’4 when I was married but after an accident and years of back problems I was measured at 5’2 by the military docs, which put my BMI at a 44. At a 44 with no comorbidities I definitely qualified. My surgeons office said I was 5’5 so I barely made 40 BMI, I only barely qualified for surgery. At my last appointment they didn’t recheck it but said I was listed at 5’4 and a 41 BMI. Definitely have them recheck your height [emoji1360]

Have a great day!

There is a cash pay option! That’s what I’m doing and am in same shoes. People fly in all the time and have surgery and leave where I live.

Between the time I first met with my surgeon and the time his office submitted to insurance, I lost so much weight and my BMI disqualified me. However, they are supposed to use your starting BMI, plus I had co-morbidities. My doctor wrote one appeal letter and they approved it. It makes no sense to have to regain weight to qualify, but insurance is a business and they don’t want to pay without a fight. Find out what your appeal rights are.

So frustrating., but don’t give up! Wishing you luck!

@janello you said 'as far as you know' you have no comorbidities. Have you had a sleep study for sleep apnea? What is your BP and cholesterol?

I would at least try for a sleep study.

Good luck.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
