hoping to be banded in 2008

Recommended Posts

I am not banded yet. I am still discussing insurance options with husband, He wants to choose blue cross federal basic and I am leaning toward bluecross federal standard. I really wish I knew which way to choose to get quick approval. I am at the weight where people think that I am actually not obese enough to consider the surgery. But these people have never had to deal with the weight issues that I have had to deal with. It is going to happen just dont know when, where or which one. I have been contemplating this for over a year so it is not a quick decision on my part, something I have really thought about. I plan on hanging in here with you guys. Cindy:help:I can use all I can get.

Hi Cindy. I'm not banded yet either. I'm only now getting started with the insurance thing. The insurance we have has a 6-month program you have to go through with them before they will approve. That's on top of all the stuff you have to do through the doctor. It's going to be a long wait, but I'm preparing myself by reading and learning. Good luck with your insurance.

Hey and how are you? I'm in the processing of starting lap band procedure. I'm at the stage where I've been visiting my doctor for the last 5 months. I have one more month to go. I've been writing in my journal everything I've put in my mouth, from Water, coffee, food and etc. My insurance will cover my procedure only because I have sleep apnae, right now I'm 234 lbs, have a bad left ankle, bad right knee (because I use my right leg to support myself, when my left ankle gives out) also, I have a bad back, high blood pressure. I was told by my doctor I'm one of the smallest person that has step foot into his office. But, I feel that with the lap band, it will help me rid the excess weight off my body and I can start feeling and looking healthier. And that is what it is all about. Me feeling healthier and good about myself.

I have not even had a consult yet, still deciding what road I need to travel. I am also not at a weight where the insurance company will be jumping through hoops to pay for the band, but I do have some other health issues (at only 24 years of age) that may help with getting approval. I have read post after post on this forum, day after day since I found it! What a great resource. Please keep us posted on your journey, I love hearing about all of you who actually KNOW where I am...So thank you!

HAVE YOU GONE ON LINE TO LOOK CLOSELY AT BOTH POLICIES AND FIGURE OUT WHICH ONE IS BETTER FOR YOU..AND DO YOU ACTUALLY MEET THE MINIMUM BMI AND OTHER CRITERIA...I am a Federal Employee and i paid out of pocket to have my lap band done. NOw I am looking for a medical coverage that will help me maintian it,, in case of slippage and other stuff...I am tired of paying out of pocket for maintennace.. SUCH as $5000. for a SLIP.

LUCK REAL CLOSE AT THE VERBAGE ON THE WEB SITE IN REGARDS TO WHAT YOU HAVE TO MEET FOR THEM TO COVER THE LAP BAND PROCEDURE.

Cindy,

Congratulations on your decision to be banded...that is the first step....I went thru the insurance run around and was denied by two different insurance companies....finally, I decided to self-pay...$15,000.00 and worth every penny..I would do it again tomorrow....I love my band....I was banded in 4/07 and I have lost 62 lbs..

Hi Cindy

I am hoping to be banded asap but have to wait for financing. I live in Canada so no insurance coverage for the surgery. Where are you? I want to lose about 100 pounds. How much do you want to lose?

hey everyone! I am banded, was done so on june 24, 2008. I have lost 22 pounds since I started this and I was told that 11 pounds was Water and 4 muscle. This is an experience and well worth everything that you have to go thru to get it done. I go for my first appt on friday. they usually want to see you within 2 weeks but there was not appt. So I will go then and will let everyone know how it goes. this has not been a bad experience at all. Keep pushing to be able to get it done. I did and I am happy that I did so.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
