I’m two weeks post-op. And I feel major pangs of regret. My recovery is going fine but I’m missing food. I just want an egg or some cottage cheese. Does anyone have any tips for the regret?

Hi pdiz,

I’m 7 days post op so just a little behind you. I’m still on liquids - broth, popsicles, Water, Jello, etc, and I got to add non-fat milk at day 4. That non-fat Fairlife milk is delicious and feels so good in me.

Like you I’m looking forward to some real food, even if it’s puréed anything. BUT.. what keeps me going is the long term goal! I will struggle a bit now, and can handle it, knowing my not to distant future I will be losing a lot of weight.

At what point will your surgeon allow you to add anything? Are you just days from that?

Look at the big picture. Focus on how good you are going to feel. Read the success stories of others. They really are motivating to me.

I wish you success!

This is excellent advice. Keep in mind that someday soon you will have more food choices. It may be a struggle in the short term, but the results are worth it. Take a look through the success stories. All those people have had struggles on their journeys, but I would guess that every one of them would tell you it was worth it! I was super hungry at two weeks out. Now at three months out it seems like a distant memory and I'm glad I powered through it. Good luck and stay strong!

I had regrets too about a week after. I’m two weeks post-op now and it gets easier. You NEED to change your relationship with food if you want to be successful. It gets easier and it’s very rewarding!

I'm two weeks out and I have zero regrets. I feel like I got a second chance at life. But I do understand how you feel about missing food. My doctor requested I do a few extra days of full liquid so I have to wait until Friday to move to stage 3. Have you tried looking up recipes for your next stage? Maybe that will motivate you to get through the regret so you'll really appreciate the next type of food you're able to eat. I've already got my whole menu planned for Friday!

It’s understandable. You’re tired of the liquids and want food. I felt the same way but did not feel regret. I think for me I was so fortunate that I was glad.

I did feel impatient for solids though. Then when I ate, it was hard at first. This is such a slow process of adjustment that one has to be solid in their choice.

I personally feel your regret will pass and you will come to see it’s just adjusting that’s hard. Give yourself time and be gentle on you. You’ve done so much already. Pat yourself on the back.

Most people get this. It's mostly caused by habit and sometimes addiction. It will pass, I promise! Soon you'll think less about food and the cravings go. It also gets easier when you're not as restricted (:

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
