Working out pre-surgery

Recommended Posts

So did any of you start a workout routine before surgery? Do you think it helped with a more speedy recovery? I went and joined a gym yesterday and am having surgery in December.

I have always had a gym membership, but got really serious pre-op surgery and started waking and toning muscles. I agree with you that it is a great way to start and my recovery time was one week. My surgeon told me that I would be back in the gym a week after my laparoscopic sleeve surgery and I was. Of course I didn't do anything crazy my first week and concentrated on cardio and light workouts. Good Luck!

In September I joined a gym and started going 5 days a week for my upcoming Nov surgery. Unfortunately with all my extra weight, the usual routine I did when I was smaller did a number on my feet. Developed plantar fasciitis and now working back up towards just being able to walk without excrutiating pain. Exercise physiologist says I did too much too soon.

TL;DR - I think it's a good idea as long as you take your time and don't push yourself.

pre-op workout would help you to get off some extra weight, which might be very helpful during the surgery itself (less inner fat, easier laparoscopic access etc) - thus a better and a faster recovery! Just keep in mind that you won't be able to return to your gym soon after the surgery:

- no heavy weights lifting for a few weeks
- run out of stamina extremely fast
- pains and weakness in general

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
