Today marks two weeks until my surgery date. On the 25 my surgeon gave me two pre-op diet options. I wanted to try the liquid diet option, so I began right away. About half an hour after consuming a Premier Protein vanilla, I developed one of the worst Migraines of my entire life. About an hour later I got violently ill. My headache lasted three days. Needless to say I will not be having that product again. Luckily my pre-op diet doesn't have to be liquid, but I'm now terrified for my post-op diet because it will be exclusively Protein Drinks. Has anyone else had a similar reaction to any of the Protein Shakes or powders?

Premiere vanilla and strawberry hurt my stomach, the chocolate doesn’t bother me and I drink it frequently. I also like body fortress in chocolate and Bariatric Advantage. I never liked chocolate but for some reason I can’t tolerate vanilla protein

If you are looking for a more savory option Unjury chicken Soup is good. Also syntrex has fruit flavors.

Thanks @Rae5148. I have been eyeing the Unjury chicken Soup for months knowing I would enjoy a more savory option in general but am too stubborn about paying the money for something I won't know if I like or sits well with me. I swear the surgeons need to havea surgery party for people at some time around the pre-op with samples of all the different Protein Shakes. Oh well.

You should also try Unjury or Isopure unflavored. I would guess the problem is in the artificial sweeteners or flavoring agents. So, if it were me, I'd do unsweetened, unflavored then flavor it myself with things I know I can handle.

I love Isopure Unflavored in homemade chicken and beef broth. My freezer is stocked up and waiting!

@FluffyChixYes that is what I will be trying! I realized after the fact that the one I drank is made with milk. I also discovered that whey Protein is a by-product of dairy, and even though it may not be triggering my lactose intolerance since the lactose is mostly non existent, my body may have an aversion to the other milk Proteins which totally makes sense. It could also be some artificial sweetener like you said, I'm known to get headaches from certain "no calorie" drinks. I'm going to try both a whey and a soy unflavored to see how I do.

Does the Isopure need to be mixed with your broths under a certain temperature? I know the Unjury has to be under something like 130/140 degrees.

All of them have that temperature thing or it will clump. It denatures the Protein above 140degrees. But I got used to "tepid" just to get it down. I had to experiment to find ones I could use pre-op so I don't have any surprises.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
