My story - pre surgery

Recommended Posts

I have a date since last week (Nov 30th) and everyday I question whether I should back out.

I spent most of my adult life thinnish (130) but always on a diet and went up and down 10-15 lbs and felt that I understood the struggle. I felt different than my thin friends who would always leave food on their plate. And I found ways to get my sugar in so I have a bad relationship with food and def a stress eater. Once I had my kids at 38, I spent the next 9 years going between 170 and 247 (current weight.) I managed to loose 70 lbs 3 years ago with Weight Watchers and thought I had it all figured out. Even threw out my fat clothes. Then I spent the following year gaining it all back. I realize food is my addition and I don't understand how I couldn't keep it off and why I can't get back there.

I'm becoming so anxious about it now that it seems real. I'm not sure if I should be excited but I'm scared of long-term issues with gastric sleeve surgery. I feel good about committing to the plan and loosing weight but I'm so nervous about so many other issues that might come up. Partly because I have been reading people's experiences on the boards. My fear is going through all the pain, recovery and learning to eat in a new way and trading in my success with weight loss for another set of problems like nausea, Constipation, hunger and not eating much but still gaining, etc.

And of course there is also the unknown. What type of consequences will I experience 10-20 years out from Vitamin deficiency and any unknown issues that will occur based on this irreversible surgery. Ugh I'm struggling here...

I will say there are many positive posts so I'm trying to sift through the large amount of information here.

I'm already a bit resentful that I won't be able to eat like my family or drink a nice glass a wine with my dinner but it would kill me to feel awful on top of that. Something about this surgery feels wrong and yet I'm fighting to start my 50s in good health. I have 2 kids and a husband and want to be healthy and live long enough to be around. I'm willing to do the work and change my ways. I know it will be good for me. Thanks for any words of wisdom. I appreciate having a place to come for information.

I'm in the same place. It must be normal. It's all getting too real for us. Make a pintrest board of all the outfits you'd like to wear when you are where you want to be and look at it often. Include any occasion wear and everyday styles that you can't wear now. It has really helped to look at my Pintrest board when I'm doubting. We are the same age. We can do this. Eyes on the prize...

My surgery is Nov. 17. Yours?

I was sleeved on 6/22/17. I had the same fears before surgery. But honestly my experience has been mostly positive. Of course the first weeks, are hard. The liquid diet is miserable, the gas pain and nausea are no joke, and the Hair loss is the worst. But it will all pass. I no longer have nausea unless I over eat or eat fried foods. The gas is only occasionally. I'm dealing with hair loss now at 4 months. But I've lost 100 lbs in 4 months. I feel great. So if I can get to goal another 50 lbs to go. It will all be worth it. And I understand the food addiction. But in my case I've not really wanted to eat much. I try and eat small light Snacks all day and have whatever my family is having for dinner. I just skip the bread. I can't eat bread it blows me up. I don't drink sodas or anything carbonated. I bought me some sugar free hard candy for times I need a little something sweet. I even have a special drawer that has Sugar Free Chocolate. That's my way of mentally knowing I can have it if I want it. I hardly ever eat it. But it helps knowing I can. You will figure it out as you go. My way might not be the best way but it's working for me. Good luck on your journey. SW 319 CW 219 goal 165

I'm scared too. I told my surgeon that I don't have any holidays booked and that I can have the surgery anytime. All was going well until I got a call asking if I could come in for surgery on the 16th of November! [emoji33] I was in shock as if suddenly somebody told me it was actually happening so I declined. It hasn't stopped spinning round in my mind since. I posted on here about my worries and everyone was extremely helpful, I'm feeling better about it now. You are definitely not alone! Feel free to read up my post "petrified and indecisive" if you wanted to feel better about being so worried lol.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
