4 Weeks Post-Op: Can't eat or drink anything!

Recommended Posts

Hi folks, I want to know if anybody has a solution or timeline of where this will go away...

I have spent the past week in pain and extreme nausea. Anytime I eat or drink I get nauseous. It does not matter what I do or how little I drink or eat. And it's a persistent bugger. And I have pain that my surgeon is just saying is incision pain because it's near the incision (upper right quadrant). I went to ER and the CT and Ultrasound were clear and the endoscopy was clear.

I had zero issues with food in the first few weeks and now I literally cannot have it without wanting or actually vomiting (zofran has curbed some vomit spells). Is there any end in sight? All my doctor said was to keep a food journal and I'd see correlations, but it is literally everything. :( I'm back at work and I cannot do this!

Normally I would say that the symptoms match that of a stricture. This article discusses strictures. https://www.realself.com/question/stricture This is especially true because you are experiencing nausea even with liquids. But in your case you underwent an endoscopy and I believe this would have detected that condition.

I find I get nausea (not clear to the throwing up) because of the smell of things. It feels like somethings smell like a dirty kitchen sponge, especially whey products. But I can't do soy Protein since I've had breast cancer.

I'm glad you've seen your doctor, and they are aware of how you're feeling. Maybe meeting the NUT would give you some ideas of what to try.

sounds like a stricture. I had two of them (one at 4 weeks out, another at 8 weeks out). If it's gotten to the point where you can't even keep liquids down, go to the hospital. You can live without food for a few days, but not fluids. They'll fix it for you - it's a very easy fix (and they'll put you under so you don't feel anything). It's quick and you'll feel 100% better afterwards.

UPDATE: Never mind, I see you already had an endoscopy. Hmmm....this one is puzzling, then....

Yeah, the endoscopy showed no stricture. It baffled him, which I think is the reason he told me to keep a food diary. But the best I can do right now is find what makes me LEAST nauseous. I'm getting in nowhere near enough fluids or Protein.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
