I am planning to have my gastric sleeve on the 13th of November (today is Oct. 26th). I wanted to find out exactly how fast the weight will come off. I have heard a lot of mixed answers so I wanted to see what everyone here thinks. My weight is 260 and I am 5ft exactly. Any thoughts?

That's a tough question to answer. Most people lose 20 - 30 lbs in the first month, but it varies depending on your starting weight, your body comp, etc. Also, everyone's body adjusts differently to the surgery. After the first month, I believe people tend to lose around 10 pounds a month for the next 5 months and then it slowly tapers off. It's all dependent on your body and how you work the program, though. That's why you see so much variation!

There is really no way to predict and it's important that you are managing your expectations appropriately.

Some posters here have theorized that your pre-op weight loss will be predictive of your post-op weight loss.

There are also other factors - starting BMI, age, gender, height, genetics, etc.

For myself, in the past I had been able to successfully lose weight many times and at a fairly quick pace, but was unsuccessful at managing my diet for the length of time required given how much weight I needed to lose.

Here's what happened for me:

10 day pre-op diet - 16 lbs lost

1st Month - 29 lbs lost

2nd Month - 12.6 lbs lost

3rd Month - 10.4 lbs lost

4th Month - 12.8 lbs lost

5th Month - 13.4 lbs lost

I have lost 55% of my excess weight. The AVERAGE weight loss for gastric sleeve is 60% - but that's an average with what is actually happening on both sides of the bell curve.

There will be some factors beyond your control - age, height, gender and genetics.

There will be some factors completely in your control - diet adherence, portion control/calorie management, exercise/activity, etc.

Good luck and best wishes!

Best guess:

Plan on losing 10-15 pounds the first month, and 6-8 pounds a month after that.. and the scale will pretty much stop at 160-180lbs. (Once it stops you'll have to work extra hard for additional losses).

If you lose faster, it's gravy, but keep expectations low so you aren't disappointed.

You want to find out EXACTLY?

You know no one can answer that. You've gotten some good estimates but it's impossible to predict and what you do (eat, exercise, drink, etc) plays a role too.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
