Hey all!, another newbie here-

I am in the preliminary stages of the Lap Band process, I attended a mandatory seminar in July and will have nutrition a nutrition seminar in Nov. and 2 one-to-one appts. with a nutritionist in Dec. & Jan.

I am starting to get excited about this whole process, but I am anxious to "get going", anxious to get the weight off......... I imagine others have experienced the same feelings? Assuming I meet all the pre-op requirements, I am roughly calculating that surgery would not be until the end of March 2008......

I am wondering what people did while in the "waiting" stage of this process, waiting to even have the nutrition seminar (which won't happen for another 5 weeks). Did you start working on your nutrition and exercise early? I am finding it difficult to get motivated while in the "waiting" stage, however, I know once I meet with the nutritionist I will extremely motivated b/c the process will be more a reality, more tangible at that point.

Any advice?

Many thanks!

Traveled...went to Mexico on a cruise for my pre-op. And yes, that's a good idea to start working on your nutrition and exercise early on. I was working on mine for a while but once I decided to have the surgery, I had it done within a month or two. I was selfpay and didn't have anything stopping me but me!

Sounds like you have a great head on your shoulders and things are going to move right along. Congrats on the decision and we shall see you on the loser's bench!

I joined my local gym and waddled in there all 265 lbs of me. I was embarrassed but I knew I needed to be there. I would swim for 30 minutes. Slow laps of course. Eventually I was up to walking 4 miles on the lap course. The compliments I recieved from people who had noticed me big and then becoming smaller and smaller made the embarrassment so worth it.

So I started in a size 26 swimsuit and finished my membership in a size 10 tanktini.

When I started maintanance I had to cut my mega exercise back to 2 miles a day and so I quit my membership .

Good luck,

edie

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
