Taking vitamins makes me nauseous!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys!

I'm just over 8 months post op now, and ever since, I've been having problems with Vitamins. I've tried probably five different brands, I've tried chewable, soft chews, and plain swallow pills. I've tried taking them with food, before food, after food, and completely separate from food. At some point, all of it makes me nauseous. I usually don't have to vomit, but it's super uncomfortable. Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, have you found a comfortable solution! I don't want to be turned off to taking my extremely important supplements because they make me feel sick!

Thanks :)

Can you try taking smaller dosages, more frequently?

I haven't tried gummies yet, even though I took them a few years before surgery. Some people have told me they're not sufficient after surgery, but I don't know for sure!

The Vitamin I'm on now is actually a four times a day dosage in smaller bits. It hasn't seemed to help the nausea, and it's harder to remember a four dosage regiment too :(

Maybe try the sample pack from Celebrate Vitamins? I ordered mine and am looking forward to trying the drink mix that tastes like SF Tang! :)

I'd also make sure I took it after eating my biggest meals with dense Protein up front.

@FluffyChixIt's a great pack and I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't gotten it yet :D Unfortunately, those are some of the ones I've tried and failed with. I hope you like it though!

@EmmyJ, I’m in the same boat here at 5 months post. I’ve switched to who knows how many Vitamins (and losing money too!) because of the nausea factor. Celebrate were the worse for me. Bariatric vitamins are right behind them. Tried liquid, disgusting!!! Currently, I’m trying to not throw away money and use the rest of the Bariatric Advantage pills. I take mine right before bed time, so that I’m hopes I’m asleep before the nausea hits. Seems to work this way unless I can’t sleep and it hits. Ugh. Oh, and I take half the dose of now...I don’t do the full one. Seems better this way too.

I am almost 3 months post sleeve and have been having lots of problems with the Vitamins. For me one problem was the multiple vitamins. I have tried several brands and all made me nauseous. I just tried Centrum liquid and so far so good on that one. I was also having trouble with the one that was composed of Calcium, magnesium and something else. I am now using Citracal instead. My doctor also recommended a liquid one called Bluebonnet. I haven't tried that since Citrcal seems to work for me. Try and narrow it down and see it one or more is making you sick.

The ones I have are high in B12 and b6 which was my main concern. And sometimes if I seek tired ill pop another one. I take them right when I wake up

My doctor hasn't been extremely helpful, just advising me to keep experimenting with Vitamins that fit the profile.

Thank you for your Vitamin suggestions! I'm glad to hear I'm not alone with this problem.

@BDME, what brand do you use?

I started with I think it was called Nasocobal because it had B12. My insurance paid most of it and I paid a copay and besides the B12 I got Calcium, magnesium and something else in combination, Iron and multiple Vitamins. They have both the chews and pills and I got nauseated with both. So now I just take citracal ( I don't know the brand for calcium), Iron I don't need. The multiple Vitamin is Centrum liquid and I think I am going to try the one of the under the tonque B12. Good luck! I think it is a lot of trial of and error unfortunately.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
