When did you have coffee again?

Recommended Posts

I'm a week post opp and ready for some coffee even if it's Decaf. When did you drink coffee again after surgery??

I am 10 days post and still haven’t touched the stuff. I was going to wait until my first post op check up. I know some people never stopped. I go back to work tomorrow so that will be the real test. I may have a cup

I go back tomorrow too! I've been dying to mix my Carmel Premier Protein with two shots of espresso

Decaf about day 4. I started regular once I started getting in 64oz of Fluid per day. Maybe 2 weeks?! Now it's 1 cup per day, and a tumbler of decaf w/protein powder mixed in.

How does the coffee taste mixed with Protein Powder? I drank a small cup this morning with some Stevia and it was satisfying enough.

I resumed fully caffeinated coffee at 2 months post-op.

The rationale for avoiding coffee during the first month out is the acidity: coffee is very acidic and may irritate or interfere with your new sleeve's healing process.

That’s really interesting because I’ve been wondering about that. In my plan in Australia they say coffee is fine to have. We do have the best coffee in the world though [emoji12]
But I do wonder if that’s also a calorie thing... in Australia we tend to drink it black or flat white which is coffee and milk but small sizes, not the large sizes with flavours and stuff.
I did have trouble in Vancouver ordering coffee, I was being given these large buckets of milk with flavours until I found an Australian girl working in whole foods who knew how to make me a flat white! I am teasing a bit [emoji23][emoji23]
But the acidity... that’s interesting and worth thinking about [emoji16]

I love the taste of coffee, even if it's Decaf. I wasn't cleared to have caffeine until 3 months post op, so I drank decaf until then. Started adding a cup of regular coffee at 3 months every morning for a couple of months. Now, at 11 months post op, I drink 3 cups of regular coffee every morning and then have decaf when I want it in the afternoon or evening.

Decaf was fine on my earliest liquid plan. I just had my 3 week post-op and asked About caffeinated. He said one cup is fine but to drink an extra cup or more of Water. Caffeine is dehydrating . So that plusthe the acid for some people make it not the best choice. I think a lot of recommendations are due to the dehydration factor and not being able to get enough fluids already in the early weeks.

I was told no caffeine for two reasons: 1) it's a diarhetic and can contribute to dehydration. 2) it can lead to mal-obsorbtion as caffeine causes the intestines to spasm and push waste out.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
