Concerned about GERD

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

I'm early in the pre-sleeve process (just got accepted into the Bariatric program last week, now 6 monthly weight management visits before surgery can be scheduled).

I have GERD that is well-managed with Omeprazole, and I'm wondering what I may experience post-sleeve.

For those who had pre-existing GERD that was relatively mild/controlled, can you tell me about your experience after being sleeved?

I'm wondering if it's worth considering bypass instead.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Thanks LaLa. That's what I'm afraid of. I will follow up with my bariatric clinic.

I had GERD before and it was well controlled with meds. I really didn't want bypass. The few days post-op in the hospital were brutal for the acid. Since then, I've had it a couple of times. I'm almost 4 weeks out.

I did not know how bad my acid stomach was before the surgery. Whenever I felt that gnawing in my gut I ate to stop it, even if I wasn't too hungry. After surgery I had the same feeling and it scared me. I thought I went through all of this and It didn't work !!!! My doctor put me on an anti acid 20 Mg twice a day and it stopped. I know longer feel that horrible feeling and I do not feel hunger at all. I eat by the clock so I can try to make Protein goals.

Post surgery I had the worst stomach acid I've ever experience! I had 1 month of meds after surgery and after that ran out it was really bad. I decided to ignore it and hope that my stomach would naturally adjust and now at 9 weeks post op its almost gone...

So im almost 2 months nov.12 will make 2 months. And i always feel hungry even an hour after i eat
I take the [emoji173][emoji91] pills the doctor gave me but sometimes by mid evening it kicks in. Ive even had it so bad one night i thought i would have to go to thr hospital. I had never felt that kinda pain before. When i get [emoji173] [emoji91] it last for hours. But i will say its not as bad as it was before surgery. I also feel like the weight loss had come to a stop right now for two weeks nothing just a total of 38 1bs. Sorry for rant lol

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
