How often did/ do you vomit post-surgery?

I vomit at least 3 times a week - I am 3 months post sleeve, I sometimes vomit every meal - I think
The main cause is spicy food, trying to drink with food or that bite too much

Oh no! That doesn’t seem ok! Does your surgeon know?

I had my gastric sleeve surgery two days ago. I did have dry heaves while in the hospital. The dr ordered a prescription for nausea and no problems since. I completely agree go slowly with anything you put in your mouth. Good luck to you

Thank you Catherine!

I'm doing well. I'm not quite up and all over the place yet, but the only thing that's hard so far is the puréed diet. Pretty much live on yogurt. My sleeve seems fine. Thanks for asking!

Did you have anyone to help you once you got home? Have you tried eating cottage cheese or Soup?

Hi all,

I am just starting this process. I see the surgeon and team for first time on 12/19. I have a terrible fear of vomiting- I get panic attacks when I feel like I may get sick. Both people I know that have had gastric bypass have to throw up at least once a week. This is the only thing that scares me about surgery- I’m leaning towards the sleeve. I need to mentally prepare for this if I’m going to have to deal with the “v” on a regular basis. Any thoughts or advice?

thanks!! Megan

Not once and I'm 8 days post op. I think if you eat too fast it will happen, just take the eating really slow and savour the food. The temptation to bog in and eat fast is there but when you feel that full discomfort just have a rest and wait for the food/puree/drink to settle down. Cheers.

Thanks! I need to learn to SLOW down when I eat.

Can I suggest that it maybe worthwhile to watch some episodes of FAT DOCTOR or THE OBESITY MYTH or WEIGHT LOSS WARD on Youtube?

By watching a range of episodes (about 25 altogether) in the two months prior to my own surgery, I got to see almost the whole range of others' experiences AND how the surgeons, GPs and hospital staff intervened or helped.

It might help to read some of the threads here where others have discussed how they've handled reflux/vomiting, etc.

Best wishes in getting through this period ahead.

Been there and done that also, I was very nervous on surgery day, woke up at 9 am in recovery and walked to my private room 1 hour later. I must be the luckiest man alive as I have had zero problems with anything. (felt like i've done 50 sit ups)

I think we all must over-research Dr Google and build up a crescendo of 'what ifs' .........but alas some a luckier than others.

I had my surgery on Monday, October 23. I have not vomited at all. I am following all instructions closely and I have anti-nausea medicine that I take in the morning. I am going to try not taking it at all tomorrow. So far, so good!

I’m almost 3 years out and occasionally I still vomit. It happens when I eat too fast, too much, or I don’t chew my food enough. (I didn’t vomit the first 4 weeks as I was very cautious not to strain those staples)

Having said all of the above, today I can do everything right and I will still vomit. My deva tiny tummy just isn’t happy and I’m running for the nearest waste basket. Not often, once every few months. Doc said it might be I have a very small pouch.

No regrets!!

When I see them this month I will let them know - I eat too much - if I am careful and don’t eat dense foods it is less likely

In 7 months, I've only vomited once, and it was from taking a Vitamin that didn't agree with me. I have a sleeve.

I just experienced this like a few minutes ago. First time post op took a vitamin that didn't sit well. It was a capsule that I opened to take. Now I'm afraid of this vitamin. Ugh. I'm struggling with finding Vitamins I can handle.

Exactly three weeks post-op, I had my first reflux experience at lunchtime Thursday Nov 2.

I was slowly sipping some Soup and took a short break to listen to a news item on the radio.

As I sat back down, some soup and 'stomach acid' (?) came back to the very top of my throat.

Unsettling couple of minutes ... I eventually instigated a couple of deliberate small burps to alleviate.

Waited about 35 minutes then cleaned my teeth, gargled and drank about 100mL of chilled Water.

I am experiencing nausea with my multi Vitamin. Searching for one that doesn’t make me feel sick.

There are vitamin patches now and a brand of Vitamins that melt in your mouth and taste good called vitamelts. Maybe those are some alternatives. 😊

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
