Post surgery back pain?

Recommended Posts

Hi :)

I’m wondering if any else has experienced this or has ideas:

I had gastric bypass 12 days ago, and have had terrible back pain since the first moment in recovery that I remember.

The pain is directly on my spine, middle of my back. I’ve never had back pain before.

Hospital staff said it was from laying in the hospital bed and that it’d be better once I could sleep in my own bed. Once I got home, my surgeon suspected it was gas. 6 days out I went to the er for it - an xray showed nothing and they had no suggestions.

I’m not constipated, eating is better than expected, no other issues... except I can’t sit, stand or walk for more than a few minutes at a time.

It is getting worse each day instead of better. There is no numbness or tingling in my legs/feet. Laying flat on my back or kneeling with my head down are the only positions that alleviate the pain.

My highest weight was 314 in 2015, day of surgery was 244, currently 236.

Any help/ideas greatly appreciated :)

Might it be muscle spasms? I'm no doctor. I've just been dealing with chronic back pain for years. Maybe see if someone can rub the area with tiger balm and massage it and see if it's muscle related? Have they run tests to see if it's organ related? Like from your kidneys?

You may need to get adjusted. I have had the same pain since surgery I was sleeved 9 days ago. I have an appointment with my chiropractor on Monday. It’s probably trapped gas, and going to a chiropractor can help release it

I agree that it might be spasms. Also, if you had a significant weight loss between preop and now, that could be the cause. I had severe lower back pain one month or so post op. The bariatrician told me it is common after a sudden moderate to severe weight loss in a short space of time. If your X-ray showed nothing abnormal, maybe try alternative therapies such as heat packs, heat rub and gentle exercise like, walking and squats. Go as low as you can tolerate with squats and try to go lower each day. I hope the pain subsides.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
