Water, Water Everywhere...

Recommended Posts

It has become very clear, between the reading materials my surgeon has given and the advice from everyone on this forum, that Water is one of the most essential pieces of success post-op. My concern is that I have never been one to hydrate regularly. I roll my eyes whenever "stay hydrated" is toted as a cure alll... headaches, feeling fuller, Constipation, nausea, depression, clear skin...you name it water always seems to be the answer. But I hate drinking. I know I am in for a rude awakening for the pre and post op liquid diet, and I am committed to being a good patient. I want to meet my water levels. Can I have some ideas to make sure I am constantly sipping and getting my water on track? I need it to be easy or else I won't stick to it.

Sugar Free Popcycles help. So does watered down juice.

It's not that I don't like Water. It's that I don't drink enough. I'm lucky if I get in 12oz. I need something to keep me drinking the 60something oz that we need to maintain.

The first couple of days I found it very helpful -darn annoying but helpful nonetheless- to set my phone’s timer to 15 mins and hit repeat. Not only did it get me up and moving but also was a constant reminder to drink.

I found an app that helps me keep track of my liquid intake. Go to your app store and look at the different apps that are available. I have a 32oz water bottle that I drink all day. I fill it twice to get mt 64oz of liquids. The first few days after surgery were the hardest as for getting in my liquids. I drank Water, herbal tea, chicken broth and ate sugar free Jello and sugar free ice pops.

According to my dietician, Protein Shakes count as part of your fluids. Definitely need to be supplemented with Water, but at least they count!

Thanks everyone! It helps knowing a lot of the liquid I have counts toward my intake and I will definitely be downloading an app and buying a Water bottle to keep me motivated. I liked the timer idea, too, I'll probably do all of the above just to keep myself on my toes.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
