Alcohol! When did you first drink

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

I'm exactly two months post op and down 56lbs

I haven't had any trouble with eating or drinking and have been slowly going at my own pace, but I can essentially eat anything with no side effects

Anyway, considering my bounce back, I feel like I can easily manage a couple drinks and I'm absolutely dying to go out and relax. I thought it would take 6 months, but I honestly can't see how 4 months from now anything would be different. I'm healed and cleared for all foods, so if I feel ready isn't that enough of a reason to try?

So, when did everyone have their first drink after their op?

No negative comments please (:

At 6 months postop I had 1 glass of wine. Wobbly legs! Had to hold onto my hubby it was so bad!

"Few drinks"? Asking to pass out, if you ask me!

That's what I was thinking! I'll wait until at least 6 months (I'm a little over 2) and try it at home first. I wasn't a big drinker before (lightweight) so I can't imagine I'd tolerate even one.

I am curious as well. I had a pretty high tolerance before surgery from drinking scotch straight. I haven't been drunk since probably 15 years ago, because I normally stop after a few drinks. I have a Halloween party coming up next weekend, and the jury is out as to whether or not I will partake. If I do decide to have a drink, I will probably nurse a Michelob Ultra or something. At least it is lower cal/carb.

I don't know if it will be worth it at this point. I am leaning towards waiting until New Years Eve.

I had a Cosmo at 2 months out and was fine. Didn't feel any difference than before surgery. I do limit myself to 1 when I do have a drink which isn't very often and I drink it very slowly. I don't have anything with carbonation. I am now 3 months out and have had maybe 3 drinks since surgery.

How did you go? Or have you passed out?! To be honest I will probaly take it super slow, my drink of choice is dry martini’s so I’d possibly pass out!!!

I had 1 vodka Water with lime at around 2 months post-op; I'm wasn't a regular drinker before surgery (a few beers every now and then, but won't go back to that due to calories and carbonation), and I felt nothing out of the ordinary after one drink. No passing out or any feeling tipsy or anything like that, maybe that bar just serves weak drinks. :)

Hey everyone (: I started out with two bourbons and coke over 2 hours. Had absolutely no effect so I went for it. Had 3 shots and 3 more bourbons over about 2.5 hours. I did not get drunk faster than I normally would have. In fact I wouldn't even say I was that drunk. I got home about 30 minutes ago after finishing my last drink and am nearly sober.

My thoughts are basically that if you honestly feel ready then try one drink and increase if that goes down okay. I've always had a high tolerance for spirits so I wasn't expecting much difference.

Before surgery I could not handle wine. It made me drunk very fast and caused very bad dehydration. So obviously I won't touch wine for a long time! If you're a wine drinker I would definitely be more cautious because it's known to cause dehydration.

I'm not a big beer drinker so I didn't test it out.. But I feel like beer would probably go down totally fine except you wouldn't fit much in before you get full. So much liquid with so little effect!

Hopefully this gives people a little insight into drinking again. Obviously everyone is different and it may be the opposite for others. This is just my personal experience and opinion. The best advice I can give is to listen to your body. If you can eat and drink like normal and you feel ready theres no harm in trying a small amount. Just remember to not EXPECT to get drunk faster. Don't expect to feel sick, get bloated or get too full.

And yes, I can drink soft drink. And no, it does not give me gas pains or "stretch" my stomach. As soon as I eat food I'm full. (:

And lastly, alcohol does effect weight loss. Don't be shocked if you drink one weekend and then don't lose weight the next week. I'm fully aware of the calories and other ****. I just don't care. I'm young and I enjoy the occasional night out (:

Hi - my surgery was mid August and I have had alcohol ( mainly white wine) on a few occasions without any side effects. I was told that 1 drink post op would be equivalent to 4 pre-op but I can't say I have noticed any difference. I'm certainly not squiffy after one glass! I would say "a little of what you fancy etc, but then that's probably why I needed wls in the first place! ;)

I was sleeved in August and regularly have a glass of wine or a gin and slimline tonic (much less calories). I don’t find any difference in the effect. I do have a problem eating, I can only eat about an ounce at a time and struggle to eat more than 800 calories a day, this is slowing down my loss as I’m not eating enough and mealtimes are a nightmare 😞

I had my first drink (white wine-one glass) at 4 months post op. My team recommended I wait 4 months to try it. I have had it a few times since then, and am at 11 months post op now. Haven't had any in over 3 months, because I am currently taking tramadol and gabapentin for pain.

The most I've allowed myself in one sitting is 3 glasses of wine, and it gave me a buzz. Maybe just a little more of a buzz than before surgery. I used to like beer, but haven't tried that, even though I do fine with carbobation. The only drawback I see, is that incorporating alcohol takes up my calories and carbs. I made room for this, however, when I chose to drink. Just resulted in me not being able to eat as much good food on the particular days that I drank.

I agree that everyone will react to alcohol in different ways. You may or may not be able to tolerate it post op. I also think we should listen to our doctor/bariatric team on when to start drinking again, if allowed.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
