What to take to hospital.

Recommended Posts

I have my RNY on the 27th of November and I'm wondering what I might need for the hospital stay, what did you find helpful? What could you not of done with out? Any ideas would be fantastic, thank you.

Hi PaulaUSN,

I asked the same question a while ago and the best answers I got in my opinion were a long charging cord for your phone or tablet, and a good lip balm because your mouth will get dry. Other folks mentioned warm socks for your feet, and your own hairbrush. Another poster mentioned bringing facial wipes or baby wipes for your face to freshen up and another lady used dry Shampoo for her hair. My surgery date will likely be in December so I'm preparing as well. Good luck!!

Take loose pants like PJ pants and a robe for when you walk the halls. You will be warmer and more comfortable being covered up.

Thank you for starting this thread. I have been wondering what to take, too. I would never have thought of getting an extended cord for my phone, but that makes total sense. I also wouldn't have thought to bring my robe.

The only thing I used was my socks and phone charger. The slipper socks they gave me were 2xxl and fitted like knee socks. I was only there about 24 hours. Most of the time, I was walk, walk, walking. The rest of the time I was trying to get down a dinner tray (tea, broth, Jello, crystal light), sleeping 2 hours at a time, or high and passed out on Benadryl (reaction to something). You might think you'll have plenty of time,, but when they bring a tray of Fluid at 7, you walk, sip, walk, sip, walk sip and finally finish it, they'll bring another for lunch, lol. I did doze to some music on my phone, but any time I was awake, I was sipping or walking.

I'm planning:

Toothebrush

Lip Balm

Phone Charger (xlong)

Yoda Robe

Disposable Slippers (I always do this, cuz then I can slip them on and walk, and dispose of them in the hospital waste can. That way I don't bring home shoes that are contaminated with creepy things like C-diff, MRSA, and lions/tigers/bears--oh my!)

Not even bringing undies--commando all the way; and will wear the same things home I wore to the hospital.

Good times!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Had a sleeve in 2017, lost over 100 pounds. Had a DS surgery this year (2025) for more sustainable weight loss. 🤞

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
