I Think I am Addicted to Sugar

Recommended Posts

Yeah, Leatha, how did that work out???

Pat, I just now saw your question. The answer is I found out I do not have a 10cc band, but I do have the 10cm which is still larger than the most commonly used 9.75cm. Make sense??

Well. It worked out pretty well. The day I saw the psychiatrist, I was sick as a dog with the flu, but we changed the meds. This type of change requires 'coming off' the original drug, which throws you into a sort of 'flu like' symptoms of basically withdrawal. So, luckily, I already had the flu and it wasn't any worse than I was already dealing with. After 3 days of stopping that one, I started a new one called Cymbalta. This is one of the newer drugs, not quite in the same family as the Pamelor, so the results will be an experiment. So far, the swing from one to another hasn't been as bad as some of my past attempts. My mood seems pretty stable. I am having some sleep issues, but they say give it 2-4 weeks before you can really rely on the results, so I'm being patient. I am keeping a journal in the process, so that I can report everything accurately when I return next week for follow-up. We did not discuss the eating disorders counseling yet. I was too sick to stay any longer than I did - which was over 3 hrs. ugh..

I don't know if it's the new drug or not, but I have lost 3 more lbs for some reason since this began and I can definitely say that my appetite has wained. It's also helped in that I take this pill in the morning as opposed to the evening and it is a smaller capsule, so I don't have to have that extra yogurt/jello etc in the evening to take it with. I'm not real sure about the cravings for sweets. Interestingly, I've had some. I even indulged in ice cream when I was so sick with a sore throat and still lost.

I can tell you some things that I AM doing differently, however, which may be contributing.

I have startd a regimen in the morning where I fix up a carnation instant Breakfast with Hood Carb Countdown milk for my Breakfast. I also pour an 8oz glass of crystal light which I add 1-2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and a teaspoon of Vitamin C to. I have been bringing my tuna salad lunch kit to work and avoiding the cafeteria (and the evil homemade Cookies there), I may have a V8 to boost my lack of veggies, then in the evening, I either bake a chicken breast, baked scrod or crabcakes for dinner and add some veggies or not. I have also been taking a dry bowl of frosted mini shredded wheats to munch on during the day. Interesting thing, this past week or so, I haven't cared so much about the munching. Something's working.. :D

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
