Just Left Pre-Op Appt - FREAKING OUT!!!!!!

Recommended Posts

I am seriously about to have a breakdown. :( I went in to my pre-op appt and my doctor was reviewing my blood work and it shows that my potassium is high. He said we will need to re-test this the morning of surgery and I said well what does that mean, could it affect my surgery? And he said yes, if your numbers are still high we would cancel surgery that morning. And I'm like OMG!!! WHAT?????? And I said well what are the chances of it coming down by Tuesday (my surgery date) and he looked at the rest of my blood work and said that my kidney numbers are better than his so he thinks it is probably just an issue with how they drew my blood at the lab. I said I would like to get re-tested NOW, I don't want to wait until Tuesday morning right before surgery to find out so I went and got my blood re-done and I let the lady know that this is for surgery and the last lady went into my arm three separate times until she got blood and I don't want the same thing happening again. So she got blood the first time and now I wait.............................Prayers please!!!!!!

Stand down!!!! This happens all the time and it’s generally because the blood has just clotted in the tube before it’s got to the lab. I’d bet ya a thousand dollars it will be fine on the day, pretty horrible to freak you out like that though! It will be fine!!! I’m medical by the way ;-)
Good luck with your surgery :-)

eden30,

Thank you for your words. I have been reading about it NON STOP since it happened and I pray you are right. I wish it wasn't mentioned to me at all and he just asked me to re-do the potassium test.....but I will do my best to remain calm. Thank you again!!

Stop worrying, docs are annoying for mentioning stuff ;-) it’s going to be fine

Now that I think back to our conversation he wasn't one bit worked up about it and I had to ask him what would happen if the potassium came back high or he wouldn't have even mentioned not having surgery.........I wish he would have told me not to over worry about this.

Absolutely! It would have been better. But I promise you, you don’t have to worry. Also high potassium levels often mean you’re dead. You seem to be live and kicking to me! Look forward to your surgery [emoji16]

So glad you're back on track and schedule! During my last visit with my PCP she asked how I felt about my conversation with the surgeon and more specifically, was his staff friendly and responsive. She commented that surgeons don't deal with patients much while they're awake so their talking skills are not as good as other docs! I laughed, but it kind of makes sense. They're focussing on other skills!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
