3 weeks out and Blood Sugar elevated?

Recommended Posts

Hi all. Little surprised and cocerned about my blood sugar. Before surgery 9-26-17, it would come in at fasting a.m. 106-120. First week out was 80-95. Then rising slowly and yesterday was 125 today 134. Im having 3 Protein Drinks, one of them with Fairlife skim milk. Three 2 oz meals of low fat, no sugar yogurt or pureed chicken w/ricotta cheese and sauce. How concerned should I be and anyone have this happen?

Ouch! Sorry you're having issues. Honestly if it were me, I'd be concerned. Protein Drinks can be fairly insulinogenic for some of us with blood sugar issues. My BGs do go up when all I'm consuming are Protein drinks. But more importantly, the Fairlife milk and yogurt also have carbs/sugars that may be affecting you. What kind of sauce? Marinara? That can also have hidden sugars.

If it were me, I'd try dropping the milk first and replace it with ricotta cheese (the lowest grams of carbs you can find with it). Next I'd drop the yogurt or switch to the lowest carb Greek yogurt (plain) that you can find.

I'd also test FBGs, pre-prandial, and post prandial until you know what your BGs are doing when you wake up and in response to your meals. It may mean that for right now, you still need your medications. Hopefully they will go down again once you are on solid food and can limit highly insulinogenic foods in favor of dense Proteins, low glycemic veggies, small amounts of healthy fats, and low glycemic berries (if any fruit).

Hang in there!

I think I should have said pre surgery the doctor said wouldnt put me on meds because I was having the sleeve shortly. Guess I will be reaching out to my endocrinologist. Thanks for your input. You seem very knowledgeble!!

@maggiekay949 I don't know how knowledgeable I am, but I have been managing to control further degeneration of blood sugar by diet (low carb), for the last 17 years. Usual onset of full blown diabetes from pre-diabetes is about 10 years per Dr. Richard K. Bernstein. My last A1c was 5.3.

Dr. Bernstein has a website and an excellent book for anyone with blood sugar issues from PCOS to pre-diabetes to full blown T2 and T1. He helped pioneer the use of the home glucometer and eating to your meter. Here's the link to him.

Surgery alone will cause blood sugars to get wacky. Mine have. Also, going without foods as well as eating smaller amounts, so having less foods verses carbs vs insulin for the pancreas to deal with as our bodies are going through this change right now cause things to stink. I have to keep a log of mine for my Dr. I was told that it may take about 8 to 12 weeks before I stabilize from my surgery date before I start to fall and can come off of my medication. I was hoping it would be before that, but I do know that all good things take time. Good luke as you follow this path as well.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
